Int Gain

One way I've explained it to my players in the past is by comparing it to Neo. You don't suddenly know Kung Fu. The increase in intelligence just makes it easier to learn it in the future.

By making skills based on current INT, and not retroactive, it means you don't have to recalculate your RANKS in skills every time your INT changes (up OR down)..once you learn it, you know it and can't forget it--you may be better or worse as stats go up or down, but you have the same number of ranks (unless you lose a level or three ;) )

i'm in the camp of int changes not retroactively granting or removing skill ranks

mainly because its too hard to say what ranks are gained when you receive Fox's Cunning and which are lost to a Touch of Idiocy

"does anyone have knowledge(geography)?"
"i could if you cast Fox's Cunning on me"

while i know this is raw i think it is silly and recomend that you make it retroactive like con is for HP

Agreed. Think of it for the reverse as well. You take a serious hit to the skull and lose some int points. Some if not all of your previously learned skills would be reduced.

Thanks,
Rich

Temporary bonuses and bonuses from removable items never apply. What I'm talking about is if your intelligence increases from level up, or from a permament grant like from a tome. THEN it should be retroactive because it maintains consistency- IE all characters with intelligence X at level X in a given class will have the same number of skill ranks.

Get it?

Ok, so a level 8 character increases his intelligence. Which class skills does he get to spend those ranks on, if he's multiclassed?

As long as none of the rank maximums are exceeded for the respective classes, any class skills.

Agreed. Call it insight into what you've already learned (above and beyond any additional Int mod to Int based skills. This is one of my groups House Rules.

This is my house rule, because I hate unnecessary state. :)

Make a waiting period on the bonus ranks gained. It takes a full week maybe for you to gain the skill points. Other magic items have a waiting period for your body to fully adjust to them. Ring of sustenance for example. This would remove the issue of Fox's cunning being used to gain skill points on a needed basis. Although, in most situations this spell isn't that powerful, so that would give more incentive to take the spell. I personally don't give skill points for Fox's cunning and have a house rule for skill points that is similar to the bonus spells granted. It simply doesn' take effect until you rest with it. This prevents the item from being passed around to use as a skill boost when needed.
