People are forgetting some classic Fantasy series with a LOT of talking animals.
The Chronicles of Narnia--and the talking animals of the OZ series (ignore the famous movie, go to the books so you don't think of Bert Lahr in a suit). I think a few of them were giant sized as well, or at least larger than normal.
As well as Aesop's Fables and classic mythology.
I did like MM2's entry for Minimals--Gary feeling that if magic can create giant animals then it can also shrink some of the big ones, so you get little elephants for the pixies. ;-)
