Interesting deal on 3.5 books at my local gaming store

So I've been having this dilemma of whether to support my local gaming store or buy the 3.5 books from amazon. Normally this wouldn't be an issue.. I'd buy them locally, to both support my store and admittedly because I prefer not having to wait for books to get shipped. I thought I might break when I saw that I could save around $45CDN buying them at amazon, so I hopped by the local shop and noticed that they have a promo going. If you trade in your old 3e books, you get $10 off each of the new ones. (So I get $30 if I trade in all three 3e books for all three 3.5 books.) Now its still more expensive and I'm losing three books, but I appreciate the effort so I'm going to go for it. I won't need the 3e books anyway. Does anyone else have promos like this going on at their local shops?

Interesting promo. Did they say what they will be doing with all those old 3.0 books? I can't imagine how they would be worth $10 to them anywhere like ebay or on their shelves.

Yeah I was thinking about that and I'm not sure. I doubt its an arrangement with their suppliers as the 3e books are now effectively worthless as far as resale goes.

Look at it this way - good business is all about repeat business.

If you give up your 3.0 books to get the 3.5 books, then you no longer have the books that all the supplements - whether published by WotC or not - refer to. That means that you will either have to convert, or buy the new material that will be produce for 3.5. That means more purchases, possibly from them.

There's also the fact that then they are the ones who get your dollars this time (as opposed to Amazon or Wal-Mart). Plus giving deals like this is a great way to make a postive lasting impression - and good impressions lead to more sales. Getting a new customer costs much much more than keeping an existing one.

Then again, your FLGS could just be run by some kick-butt people - never rule that out!

Clever promotion. I suspect that they're doing it that way to remain compeditive with the big discounters, for people most likely to buy the revised books - people who already have the originals. Essentially it's just them giving a $10.00 discount, but calling it a promotion.

It has the added advantage of removing extraneous books from circulation, so purchacers of 3.5 can't just give their old books to their friends. The stacks of 3.0 books they obtain may also be of some benefit to them, but I doubt that that's their primary motivation.

one of my local shops is selling all 3 books for $75.00 instead of $90.00

Unfortunately, my roomate works for Barnes & Noble and gets a 30% discount on everything.

Except that I have 2 copies of the 3e PHB. ;) So its win win for me, as I doubt there's really anything I'd be missing from the old DMG/MM versus the new DMG/MM. Anyways, picking them up tomorrow. Woot, dissapointment heeere I come! ;)
