Internet Grammar Pet Peeves

Pet peeve 1: "chomping at the bit" (wrong) instead of "champing at the bit" (right).

Pet peeve 2: Grammatical incorrectness for the sake of political 'correctness' but I won't expand due to the rule against political discussion on these boards.

Pet peeve 3: Using "dice" as the singular. I know some dictionaries say that's OK but I still feel that the singular should be "die".

I remember I was surprised to learn that while music hath charms, they were more interested in soothing the savage breast than the savage beast. The mental image was... disturbing.

Internet/chat abbreviations. I hate them for the most part because I don't want to have to figure them out. But then, YMMV... ;)

Lite Brigade -> a third less calories than a normal brigade.

That one used to drive my father absolutely crazy. Back in the '70s and '80s, Miller Lite ads always said, "A third less calories than a regular beer." My father would yell at the TV: "FEWER CALORIES!! NOT 'LESS'!!!"

Whether its IRL or on the net, I disdain those who use the word "literally" as a means of emphasizing any statement. Often, it leads to the word being used instead of the context appropriate opposite word: figuratively. For instance, saying "He beat the crap out of me, literally!" makes little sense unless your assailant kept beating you until excrement really did come out of your backside.

Yeah, and stuff like color instead of colour

and sidewalk instead of pavement

and people who dont use sleppcheckers!

Do people really get upset by bad spelling or not using precise grammer?

Abbreviations don't bother me all that much. Occasional mis-spellings don't bother me all that much either. My keyboard hates me, so I have some words that are accidentally mis-spelled every now and then. Plus, I never learned to type the "right" way, so I look at the keyboard and can't see what is actually being typed on the screen. It's the grammar thing that kills me. Not that I was great in English class. I wasn't. "Their", "there", and "they're", used interchangeably is one that annoys me.
