Agreeing with Thanee here... that is simply a non-possibility. The proper description would be that the polearm-wielder is actively tracking the charger with the weapon, aiming the point for the most damage. Mechanically, this just a plain old ready action that triggers a normal attack action.

Ah, but in NEITHER of the above scenarios is an attack ever attempted. The foes just happen to run into the invisible character.

I am pretty sure someone has used this excuse in court already. "He just happened to run into my fist!"

In this scenario, you are not just having one person run into another. You are having one person run into the SHARP END OF THE POINTY STICK that the other person has. To maneuver that sharp end of the pointy stick into position so that the victim can impale himself on it, counts as an attack. In fact, that sentence could well be taken to _be_ a definition of an attack....

Darkness is not an attack, but a spell, that directly damages opponents certainly is. Indirect spells, like the summon spells, do not count as an attack, for example.

Dropping a coin wouldn't end invisibility , but...

From the SRD:
For purposes of this spell, an attack includes any spell targeting a foe or whose area or effect includes a foe.

So as long as no foe is inside the Darkness you wouldn't turn visible.

Well, the Darkness spell doesn't actually have an area or an effect, just a target.

So if you cast Darkness on a rock, then unless the rock is an opponent, it's not an attack. The fact that the rock then commences to radiate shadowy illumination ins't relevant, whether there's a foe in the zone it illluminates or not.

It's entirely different to casting, for instance, Detect Magic - which has an area that might contain a foe.
