I am confused. Is this the same Iron GM tournament that was at the LA gaming conventions in the early 2010's? The Strategicon events: Orccon, Gamex, Gateway?

I was a player for one of those events, and my two buddies and I still feel guilty about being too tipsy and suggesting he use AD&D. (The rules stated the players chose.) He seemed so well prepared: Dwarven Forge, great minis, cool ideas. But AD&D didn't really fit with what he was going for. On top of that, he was a soft talker, and the hall was so loud, we couldn't hear a word he said.

If he ever reads this - we're sorry.

(Also, I believe the ingredients that year were he had to use a coatyl. Also, maybe lava?)

No. If what you’re talking about is also the Iron GM that used to be done at GenCon, my past research into the matter indicates that was started in 2004 and had a different structure (it used 3 ingredients and then the contestants would actually run the adventures produced). Although I can’t say for sure, I’ve always assumed the concept came about entirely independantly. After all, Iron Chef was quite popular for a while there.

EN World’s first IRON DM tournament took place a few years prior to Iron GM, in 2001 (the earliest surviving being in 2002). The first tournament had 6 ingredients per match and only 1 hour for entries to be posted. It has only ever taken place in online forums. You can read more of its history in the OP.

I think there could be some useful crossover between Iron Chef and Iron DM. I know I saw chicken entrails on Iron Chef once, plus the always tasty beaver anal glands. Food for thought.
