I love me some 3ed.
There are some things I miss from the old days.
Expedition to Barrier peaks
Spelljammer
Planescape
The Sha'irs Handbook
But bringing them into 3e is nothing more than legwork.
Is 3e flawless? Nope. I think the biggest mistake made was locking hitdice = level as an absolute, particularly for monsters. But you know what? That's fixable too. The ground work of the system was very solid, and some really lovely stuff came out for it before the end. Tome of Magic, Totemists, the 3.5 psionics rules and the Book of 9 swords all added both depth and breadth to the system.
I expect to enjoy it for years to come.
