Since there are no more class exclusive skills, some skills require another skill to be effective. The example given was the new Wild Empathy skill will require ranks in diplomacy to work effectively.

I was kinda expecting the exclusive skills to go the way of the dodo. Two such skills, Animal Empathy and Scry, were going away entirely, so the remaining such skills would be odd exceptions.

Looks like rangers won't have as many free skill points as we thought, and druids now have another skill they need. Remember when druids needed high Charisma scores?

Well, there goes the "wild man" archetype. The guy who can't get along with people but animals come naturally. Now, he's as smooth as James Bond.

I'll wager that "Use Magic Device" has been reworked so that it ties into a class skill. Either that, or it's another class skill tied into Bluff (talk that wand into casting the spell for you :) ).

Yeah, it's probably been reworked somehow, but it shouldn't be tied in with Bluff. Bluff and UMD are both highly valuable skills on their own, there's no need to combine them into a super-skill.

Re: "Use Magic Device"

The article states that rogues won't have to worry about fighters competing with them on UMD as it will require a lot of ranks to get things to work.

I agree. I think the common usage of the word "diplomacy" would not typically enter into the mind of one creating the Beastmaster. Why would animal empathy require human diplomacy? It must be they have broadened the definition of the word beyond its denotation, much like "dexterity" which now means many things---in D&D---beyond the dictionary definition.

Re

Dang, I thought exclusive skills was a good idea. What I didn't like was class skills. I thought the number of skill points was enough of a limitation to hold back other classes from becoming skill monsters.

I'd like to see them change all skills to general so a Fighter could raise skills like Listen and Spot as easily as a rogue. No reason listen and spot shouldn't be easily obtainable by any adventuring class. As far as I am concerned, Listen and Spot are survival skills where adventurers are concerned.

This is not quite true. Dragon issue 308 contained info on the new Ranger. It seemed to indicate that Wild Empathy was a class ability not a skill and would be replacing the old Animal Empathy skill.
Dragon #308; pg. 93
Wild Empathy This replaces the Animal Empathy skill and works much like Diplomacy but is only available to rangers and druids.

Dragon #308; pg. 92
and he also benefits by the loss of Animal Empathy as a skill. Now, rangers and druids gain that former "skill" as a better-defined class ability.

A bit confused

I have never read an issue of dragon, but I've been on teh boards enough to hear you guys talking about them all the time. But a whole list of different numbers come up, lately issues 309, 99, and 100 have come up. Are people just talking about really old issues... or is there something I'm missing?
