Is Encounters dying?

I know the coordinators of each of the DC area's FLGS encounter events, and I can't even get a seat. It's been insane in my area since 4e came out.

Thanks in part to all the former milatary people like you, greater DC has a big and active gamer community. Probably one of the easiest places to find 4E, Pathfinder, or Old School games or gamers.

On the other hand, I don't think DC itself still has any RPG stores. I am curious how many locations are actually running it?

There are at least three stores in the DC area that I know of that run it, all through the Gamers Syndicate organization: the two Game Parlor locations in Chantilly and Woodbridge, and Dream Wizards in Rockville.

For the District itself, keep an eye on http://www.labyrinthgameshop.com as they have just joined WPN and are starting to organize more events. You may even be able to contact them now if you're interested in running it there, I'm not sure if WotC has put any restrictions on Encounters based on WPN status.

It all has to do with the effort the store puts behind it. if the workers/owners do not care people wont show up. When they care and want to succeed even when your out in the sticks like I am you can easily get a solid night going.

However how much a store cares mostly has to do with how much the encounter players spend. I can easily imagine the MtG players regularly spending much more on cards, card sleeves, ... then the encounter crowd. At best they buy one heroes of [...] and are served for at least the full session if not all sessions to come. At worst they show of with their characters made with DDI and spend nothing at all.
