IS Gary Gygax's World Builder Hardcover any good?

Howdy Rich,

Sure can't disagree with what you have to say. There is a distinct advantage to having att the material in one book, though.

I think were I to want to use the material at the gaming table then I would heartily agree. I just tend to look this sort of stuff up between games, so referencing other material is, for me, not too much of a problem. That's one of the reasons I thought the book was really good for less experienced DMs - they are more likely to want information like this on the fly.

As for online material, I for one just hate it. I'd rather have it in printed form. Guess I'm old-school ;)

As old school as they get, Gary! ;)

What I was thinking is that TLG could add a couple of essays and examples of using the material in a camapign as an online supplement to the book, to help users.

Though I confess, when I find a really useful online source I tend to cut-and-paste it into a document for permanent reference.

There is an exception. I much prefer to compose material in an electronic file that working with paper and pencil--or typewriter. Haven't toughed a typewriter in a decade.

Cheers,
Gary

I tried using my mother's typewriter a couple of years ago - I just can't get over how much easier a wordprocessor is! (Though can I persuade her of that fact? )

Yes, for major documents I compose entirely on the computer these days using Word and Excel to help put ideas together. The only time I do still like to use pen-and-paper is when I am brainstorming. I still can't beat the ability to scribble little ideas in bubbles and spider-diagram them together*! All my best plots have evolved that way! :)

* a friend just got a new Tablet PC and I realise that I can do what I want on a computer now. Now all I need is the £1500 for the machine! ;)

I'd add to your comment, but I have way too many French friends and associates, and I'd never get any more wine and cheese if they caught me in the act of bashing Frenchmen

So, you're basically saying you're a French-hater, but you're too cowardly and hypocritical to admit it, just because you're also an alcoholic ?

The legends of RPGs don't live up to the expectations...

:p :D

After following this thread, curiousity got the better of me and I checked it out at my local game shoppe. I like. I plan on grabbing it this weekend.

this is going to seem like a very blatant plug

But,

per some criticisms of the World Builder's Guide lack of guides for how to use the infoormation contained in the book....

I decided a few weeks ago to start an article series in troll lord games little in house web-magazine called The Seeker.

This is really an on-the-fly series of articles as it was only decided in responce to people need to get some direction on using the WB.

The Seeker is Free, its a PDF web pub. The articles are short, a little tongue in cheek, but does offer advice as I see it is needed and it should be solid. My hope is that others start to contribut ideas and thoughts so I can start putting them in the Seeker also. Ideas and thoughts that are better thought out and presented than mine would be nice.

We could also start a world builder discussion forum on our discussion or you guys could start one here.

Just trying to help.

Bingo! Sctatch paper and pencil for brainstorming is still tops:)

As for the other socomments, I work in a limited space, so I can't comfortably have all the separate reference material around. the fewer the books needed while creating the happier I am.

Tell your mother that the old duffer of RPGs has managed to adapt from typewriter to computer, so why can't she?! computers are the greatest things to come along...ever!

Cheers,
Gary

Let's simplify this quite a bit,....anything made by Gary must be bought. hehe That should be a commandment or something,Thou shalt contribute to the livelihood of the omniprescient Gygax.

No, you are saying that. What I said was quite different

What I did suggest, though, is that the wine and cheese of France is worth suffering the indignities of typical French treatment :D

Adieu,
Gary
