Is Guild Wars free to play online?

If it's just a Diablo II rip-off, I gotta say it's better than the original. :)

It's so much fun, rediculously interesting storyline, and, yeah, removing the things about MMO's that made them an annoyance to me (My level 60 orc hunter was doing the same freakin' "fetch me seven of x item" quests he was doing at first level!).

Everyone who likes Diablo2 type gameplay is not going to like GW. Diablo2: soloing, finding uber items, farming. GW: grouping, moving ahead in story, anti-farming (Anet has made several changes so that now soloer seems to get poorer drops and more monsters are now equipped with enchacement removers which makes solo builds with monk secondary or primary lot more difficult to use).

Unfortunately Anet also foolishily tied PvE and PvP together causing deep rifts in the community. I for one can't stand that to unlock skills and equipment for PvP character use I have to repeat main game with 3-6 characters to get most of the stuff... no grind yeah right. :( In beta things were lot different.

Hey don't worry about it too much your still new. There is a forum for video games. Its called Software,Computers and D&D utilities. Its under the non-rpg forums. We have everyones back here.

And this game actually does have a connection to D&D and d20 in Jess Lebow, the guy behind the story in Guild Wars. He was the line editor at WotC for Magic novels for many years, he was in charge of the "T. H. Lain" D&D novels when they first launched, and he wrote the FR novel Master of Chains. He also co-wrote Hell in Freeport for Green Ronin.

So if I hate online and prefer solo... stay away from this game, right?

(DUH! you reply... what I'm asking is that can you play it single player like you can Diablo, or is this pretty much multiplayer only?)

Actually, no, this game is as soloable an online game as there is. As mentioned above, when you're actually playing, you're only playing by yourself or with others you've grouped with. The only time you'll notice you're not the only one playing the game is when you enter cities/outposts, and it's easy to ignore others while you're there if you want.

Although I have a couple friends that play, I've pretty much just played the game solo and it's a lot of fun.

We-ell, sorta. You won't have random people around, stealing your loot and kills and exp, that's correct. But you aren't going to literally play alone for very long. The quests get steadily more difficult, much faster than your character becomes more powerful. You can hire NPCs to help you, but they are pathetically stupid and won't be enough for long. You will have to group sooner or later.

You can solo without any NPC's to about 6th level, perhaps more depending on your character build.

I'll have to agree after about 12th, 14th level it starts to get really hard depending on NPC's to increase your party, they just keep dying as they arn't as intelligent as real players. I group with my wife and NPC's to fill the other slots and some missions are really tough as neither of use is a Monk, so you spend much of the fighting trying desperately to keep the NPC monk alive.

It isn't really a game for solo play, but I've found group play is so much better than other MMORPGs that it isn't much of an issue.

Without the whole experience harvesting, item frenzy and spam thing, teaming with other people becomes less of an annoyance and more fun, at least that is how I see things.
