Is Hackmaster a joke?

never mind - I'll edit this one, too.

But if Mercury isn't in retrograde, I hate to see what it'll be like when it is...

Yes, but he's also in that group that he feels is being mocked, so you're no more valid than he is. I'll come right out and agree that there is some mocking going on, after all KoDT was a comic mocking specific gaming groups, gamer types, and game styles. If one felt that KoDT was negative, how would they not feel that HackMaster was mocking, as well?

Ultimately, I think this is going to be the (unsolvable) crux of the evening's discussion. Everyone who's been posting tonight is in the group (old-school gamers) that KoDT and Hackmaster draw much of their humor from, but none of us are going to agree on where the line should be drawn.

There certainly IS humor in Hackmaster; no one has denied that. And, as the old axiom goes, humor is subjective. trancejeremy and yourself (and others, no doubt) find the humor "mocking," while I (and others) find the writers to be "laughing with us."

If all of us went out to a comedy club together, I'm sure the results would be the same...some would be amused, some offended, and some simply wouldn't have any reaction at all...

...possibly because they were too drunk to care...or maybe that's just my friends...

Great Holy Heironeous-

Look what happens when you step into the real world for a few hours - the forums turn into Easy-Bake Central! :)

Seriously, I am disappointed to see such negativity about Hackmaster, but also other non-d20 games in general. Have so many people become so jaded that they refute ANYTHING d20, and turn their backs on other flavors of roleplaying? I really hope not, because so many of the people I know here are fair-minded, objective, and not afraid of other opinion - it surprised me to see some have such a negative reaction.

I see Hackmaster not as a joke, but a mockery of D&D and it's fans. I see it as making fun of me. So obviously I'm not going to like it.

Trancejeremy, I am truly disheartened to see that Hackmaster, nor its inspiration KODT, does not agree with you. One thing that I must ask is if you did not see any of yourself, or your previous gaming groups in the comics, or in the game itself? I don't aim to single you out, but rather to use your comments as a springboard for my question.

Truth be told, I am certain that Jolly (Blackburn, series creator) means no harm to D&D players - after all, he is a dyed-in the-wool D&D player of many, many years, and draws so much of the comics from his own experiences, not to insult gamers, but to celebrate them, and to help us all laugh at ourselves a bit. So many people I know and talk to get such a kick out of the comics, and the #1 phrase used is, "How did Jolly get a secret camera at MY gaming table???" His comics are beloved by many many D&D fans because he knows his audience so well, not because he intends to insult them. I can only wonder just how many other gamers find Jolly's work as insulting rather than funny, because this is honestly the first I've known of it.

Just how many people see Hackmaster and KODT as Insulting to D&D players? I can't see it, but if someone can point out what they find insulting, I would love to hear it. I've found it a constant source of fun, alongside Aaron Williams' Nodwick, as the highlights of my months. In fact, these two are the only comics I ever read anymore, newspaper, comic book, or otherwise!!!

NOTE:

I ask a valid question, but I am not looking for denigrating comments from others over how people really feel. Fair warning - I will delete any pot-shots other people take with someone's honest opinion.

Err, is that meant for me? I never potshotted anyone. I gave my honest opinion, but edited my posts because they were being taken to mean what i didn't mean.

Even simpler explanation: You posted in that perfect "sweet spot" between my two posts, that makes it look like I was responding to you, when I hadn't even read your post yet. :)

I just wanted to make sure. Things are kind of weird on the boards tonight.

Not just tonight -- it seems we've been hit with Hackmaster and related woes (see "Greyhawk revival") all day. :)
