McD's fries used to rock! It been a long time since I had some really good McDonald's Frech Fries. I've been to McDonald's now & again. I've had the fries. The just suck now.

They used to be little crispy, firm bits of super-fatty goodness. Now they are limp, soggy, bits of luke-warm, super fatty suckiness.

Maybe some places still are able to make the fries right. But I haven't been there lately.

Nope, the issue is that McD's changed how they made the fries.

When they tasted good, they were fried in (at least in part) beef tallow. They don't do that anymore, and haven't been able to recapture the old flavor.

Then I realized how much they were charging for them. A tiny, basic salad the size of my hand would cost more than an entire combo meal. Just getting a salad and a bottle of water would cost several dollars more than any other meal, for much less food. Oddly, I can remember long ago when I was a kid and salads at McDonalds were big and filling. Part of me thinks it's quietly a plan to make the healthy foods unappealing, so they don't sell, then they can take them off the menu, and answer complaints about a lack of healthy options with data that healthy foods just didn't sell at all.

A good portion of the expense of Quality fast food is costumer preferences. Do I go to McDonalds for a healthy meal? No. I go somewhere else. Fast food doesn't cater to the health concious. But, tehy WANT to be able to show how people can eat at McDonalds in a healthy way. Thus the health options. They might make a higher profit per sale, but they don't sell a lot. And, the foods have a short shelf life.

As organic/health food sales continue to skyrocket (still a small part of the food industry, but some segments are seeing 50-60% sustained growth). You can bet the Fast Food jints are seeing how they can capitalize on this trend before others do. Wendy's seems to be doing a real good job.

Other's like BK, are saying 'Screw It, lets make a breakfast sandwich with more calories than 8 tubs of ice cream', aka The Meatnormous Sandwich.

Fast Food isn't really set up at present ot capture the 'health craze".

But, as more & more parents try to form their kids healthy food choice habits young, Fast Food will try to find a way to accomadate that need.

I think Burger King is great, especially their fries. The only "big" chain which used to have better regular fries was Jack in the Box (but their new ones suck). A&W is personally my favorite, but there aren't enough of them around. :\

I hate McDonald's, and their fries. It has to be THE worst franchise fast food place around.

That could be part of it, but note too that, just buying in a grocery store, you can buy several pre-formed 27% fat hamburger patties, some high-fat cheese product singles, and a pack of hamburger buns (about $4.00 for enough for 4 servings) a LOT cheaper than you can buy lean chicken breast and some fresh vegetables to make as side items (about $7.00 all told for enough for just 2 servings). Heck, even a bag salad is $1.50 for just iceberg lettuce and a few stray carrot shreds. Eating healthy is more expensive all around, for various reasons.

I like 'em well enough. Not enough to distinguish them from, say, Wendy's fries. I don't get the folks who like MacDonald's fries though--and lots of people claim that's the only thing they like there. MacDonald's fries--to me--are the worst fast food fries available.

You're like my friend, Richard. He abhors the McD's fries. He'll eat their burgers and their "ice cream" but won't touch the fries.

Now BK fries are crappy (to put it Grandma friendly) to me. Can't stand them. And their food tears my stomach up from too much fake mayo. ANd they don't know what LIGHT mayo is..... :uhoh:

I do recall when the Burger King was a "real" guy. But that was just a lame attempt to match Ronald McDonald, who is neither as funny as a real clown, nor as creepy as a real clown. He's just a grinning schmuck in white greasepaint.

You try owning and running a worldwide restaurant chain and being clown at the same time .. you can't juggle both jobs adequately ;)
