Is it too strange if a Mind Flayer is escorted by Drows?

For the next session, I need to create some minions (guards) of a Mind Flayer wizard. At first, I thought of some Grimlocks. But I have realized that they cannot attack someone beyond 40 feet from them. I need something who can attack from distance as the Mind Flayer wizard will try to do so. So I am wondering is it too strange if a Mind Flayer mage has some Drow guards or mercenaries? I know Ilithid and Drow are struggling and not sure if it is something not to be done.

Nope, nothing strange about that.
They could be slaves or mercs.

Illithid ambassadors occur in the adventurers containing Drow, fairly frequently. I'd say at worst the conflict between Drow and Illithid is fairly low key. Not much to be gained.

If the mind flayer is powerful enough, these drow guards could be thralls.

If the mind flayer is not that powerful but pose a challenge, the the drow guards could be exiles from their own home land and quite possibly living on paychecks or out of some duty to try to gain some revenge against their former homeland.

you could gain a superior advantage if these drow were wearing hat of disguises or have some form of illusion magic making them look like surface elves.
