Is it worth buying stuff especially for 3.5 anymore?

Got to admit the editions don't bother me too much, but I doubt I'd go to 4e when they release it. In fact I'd be more likely to go back to the 3 books from 1974.

What the frick? Are you serious? What rumors? Where? When? Can anyone else verify this?

Seriously, if "4.0" (how did we start referring to RPGs by computer terminology, anyway?) comes any sooner than TEN FRIGGIN' YEARS, I'm going to barf.

:(

I'm switching to Rolemaster if it comes out any sooner than 2010.

Stupid idiot rumors.

It's 2004 now, with books lined up will into 2005. It would be so freaking ridiculous to release another edition in 2006 it's actually amazing that anyone would buy into even entertaining the possibility that the rumor actually holds water.

Tell you what; I think the whole idea of a new edition by 2006 is so stupid that if they do print it, I'll eat my shoe.

Okay, here's a question:

Do you buy purchases for your game right now, or two years from now?

While I hope to continue having good use of my gaming library in two years, I'm more concerned about buying things for games I hope to run or play this year.

Furthermore, I have enough invested in my current 3.0/3.5 collection, that I think I would greet the release of a revision in the near future with severe skepticism. I think the upgrade to 3.0 was worthwhile. If 4.0 is not highly compatible with my 3.x collection, it had better give me a real good reason to upgrade and shuck off (or make difficult to use) my existing material.

Psion has a good point. You have a game to play right now. If the material is worth buying for that game, what happens in two years time isn't relevant. If you were talking about buying a car, or a heating system for your house, long-range concerns might be an issue. As it is, the purchase isn't large enough to merit such considerations.

As for listening to rumors and speculations - honestly, they're worth what you paid for them. The only real data we have on it is the early release of 3.5e. And one data point does not indicate a trend.

I don't listen to Mortality radio. But if Mr. Pramas made such comments, I'd go out on a limb to say it may have been a bit inappropriate for him to go about publicly speculating about another company's policy and intent.

What's inappropriate about that? People speculate what other companies do all the time. Lots of people do so, publicly, for a living.

Ummm,...D&D is one of the few RPGs that went for long stretches w/o rules changes/updates. Vampire had 3 editions in ONE decade, Shadowrun has 3, even obscure games like Talislanta has a 4th edition, and NONE are as old
as D&D (only Call of Cthulhu is the worst offender, at 6th edition).

If we hit 4th ed, so what? Buy it, or don't buy it. No one is holding you hostage. Why do you think there are still 1e fan sites?? :)
