Is Movie Quality Going Downhill?

I just got back from "Dark Waters," a ridiculously bad horror film that was at least a half-hour too long. While watching it, I noted similarities to "The Ring" and "The Grudge" but did not realise it was, like those other two, a remake of a Japanese film. Although it wasn't as close of a remake of "The Ring" as "The Grudge" was, it still was a horribly pieced together movie that did not make the most of the material available.

It seems I have been disappointed by movies a lot lately. A lot of movies seem to have endings that just fizzle or can be seen a mile away. Am I just expecting too much from movies or are filmmakers putting out a lot of lackluster films of late?

I never see a movie without looking at http://www.rottentomatoes.com/ first.

However, I think movies in general, especially movies targeted at the broadest popular audience are fairly crappy. There are notable standouts but they often get overlooked or underplayed. "Sideways" from last year was an amazing film -- snappy dialog, wonderfully paced, funny and sad and moving all at the same time.
