Is my monk the Flash?

Monks: more class, less crass.

I've been considering a TPK for next game so you'll all get to use your new characters. This seals the deal! Everybody dies! ;)

PS Tom up there is my DM. He'd never allow stacking anyway. Hell, he wouldn't allow Bull's Strength to stack with my normal 20 strength because in his words: "Eh? You're strong enough. Now roll for initiative against the 7 Mind Flayers..."

He's a magnificent bastard, though, isn't he? :)

That's all lies except for the DM and the bastard parts.

Yep ... even without the stacking, he's moving at 100' a round and he's got Spring Attack and a Monk's Belt (grants Haste for 10 rounds). Plus, he'll buff himself with Shield and Mage Armor. Toss in a ring a jumping, and he's gonna go all-Matrix on your a**! :)

Of course, I'm in the category that monks are still underpowered at high levels. But damn, they can be so much more fun than crappy fighters.

I've recently started playing a high level monk. I actually gave away my Boots of Standard Equipment, because I got tired of waiting for the fighter to get in the fight. I'm 14th level (with Monk Belt, natch), so I can pretty much get anywhere I want anyway. I've found Spring Attack to be less potent than I imagined.

Lucius, pick up Beyond Monks, a pdf you can get from rpgnow. It has some rocking monk feats, including the amazing Being Elsewhere. The requirement is insane (90' base move), but you move so fast it grants concealment.

Personally I'm using Cobra Strike and looking towards Strike Thru.

PS

My gaming group's experience was that the Monk became a "special mission target" for the DM - and with less quoted speed enhancers than mentioned here.

I guess that with "lowish magic" the Monk effectively had a higher ECL.

Re

Storminator,

That is funny. You gave away your boots so the fighter could get to the battle.

I can completely identify considering I played a dwarf fighter in Full Plate armor. I don't know how many times I missed a battle because I couldn't close the distance fast enough with my 15 foot per round move. I was moving what everyone else moved normally in a full round. Very embarassing.

Being fast is good, but sometimes, vary dangerous.

Every so often, in the show down battle of an adventure, my Rogue/Barbarian/Fighter reaches main villain in the first round of the combat, along with his buddy Rogue (Both have Boots of S&S and can tumble of course).

They often catch the main villain flat-footed and kill it in a round or two. But after that, they tend to find that they are totally surrounded by the villain's guards and standing far away from other party members. Because of this Kamikaze tactics, in every adventure, one of those guys tend to diejavascript:smilie(':D')

I have not seen a monk without their standard issue boots.;)

I second your opinion Shin Okada, the monk (and cleric, same boots:rolleyes: ) got themselves into a world of hurt after ditching their party members behind and getting whomped by armoured mummies.

The party split up is quite easily toastied, the urge to race off is sometimes too much.

That settles it ... I was going to take Improved Initiative for my monk as a feat, but now I'll take Weapon Focus instead. No need to be the first one into combat every single round. Thanks for the advice!
