Perhaps the greater oddity, is that if you have 6 or more ranks in riding one type of creature, it is pointless to take any ranks in riding any other type of creature.

Actually, as pointed out above, you can't take ranks in riding different creatures under any circumstances. The DM decides how familiar you are with riding the creature in question and may apply penalties, but you only have one ride skill, that applies to everything.
