Is Scribe Scroll a "Wizard Bonus Feat"?

A simple, question: is Scribe Scroll a "bonus feat gained by advancing as a Wizard" with regards to the specialist variants in the UA?

I'd say no. It's part of the training all wizards need (see spellbook).

OK, technically, the rules do not prevent you from having a spellcaster able to use a grimoire, yet unable to scribe scroll. But I'd tie these two together.

Besides, otherwise you'd be able to get a metamagic feat (like Still Spell or Silent Spell, those can be used for cantrips at first level) instead of Scribe Scroll. So it's an automatic feat, not a bonus feat.

Well, I guess it is a bonus feat then.

It's certainly a bonus feat. That doesn't stop the fact that it's not an option feat. On the other hand, I did have a character once who's concept went against scribing scrolls... and he was allowed (by the GM, of course) to trade that feat out for another magic user oriented feat.

It is a bonus feat, but as a GM, I would say that it is not one of the ones you give up for the specialist variants.

Oh yes, the POINT of his question.
I agree, it IS a bonus feat, but it's not one gained by advancing as a wizard. It's instead one gained by BEING a wizard in the first place. And therefore I'd say it's not one you give up for the specialist variants.

Every one of the bonus feat replacement abilities scales at 5th, 10th, 15th, & 20th. Only a couple of them have any benefit at 1st level (enchantment & illusion grant class skills). Thus, the implication seems to be that you're giving up your 5+ bonus feats and that scribe scroll is not affected.

I wouldn't nitpick on the exact wording. I think with "bonus feats" the UA author means the feats a Wiz gets every 5 levels, and not Scribe Scroll.

Ok, so strictly by the rules, my character would forfeit Scribe Scroll, but the majority of you feel it's inappropriate. Thanks for the answers. Shadow Shaper here we come, heh heh!

Addendum: I was reading the rules again as I was typing this, and noticed that the Conjurer variant Enhanced Summoning specifically states that this variant loses the Scribe Scroll feat, in addition to saying "...does not gain bonus feats for advancing as a wizard". I guess that settles the rules portion of it as well.
