Is there any way to use rogue powers without a crossbow, sling, or light blade?

I was thinking of creating an eladrin wizard with the rogue multiclass feat.

But they I realized: I can't sneak attack with magic. Then I looked at rogue powers, and every single one requires a crossbow, sling, or light blade. As an eladrin, I could use my longsword that I gain proficiency in, but I get use it because its a light blade.

Is there any feat, or text note that allows for you to use rogue powers with other weapons?

Currently no, but I expect something like it will appear in the Martial Splat coming out.

Unlikely ever to be, except in limited circumstances. Weapon choice makes a bigger difference in 4E than before, and doing sneak attack damage with everything would be highly suspect.

Nope. The eladrin longsword racial is basically useless except to melee clerics (too bad eladrin don't make very good clerics), and wizards who want to go for that one paragon path. Anyone else that could make use of it starts with proficiency in all military melee weapons.

The same is true of that dwarf racial proficiency. At least dwarves make good clerics...

Although, an eladrin rogue can dual-wield the longsword and a light blade, and use with former when making basic melee attacks without CA. Which doesn't really benefit you that much, to be honest.

As a DM (if that was your PC concept) I would be happy for you to use a light bladed longsword that was in all mechanical ways a short sword but a long sword look for your PC.
But RAW as it stands? That longsword prof is a waste for most PCs.

Since Magic Missile counts as a basic ranged attack, as a DM I would allow it to be used for sneak attack.

Long bow also counts as basic ranged attack, so can it also be used for sneak attack?

What about melee basic attacks? Maul for example (2d6 dmg, 2h) can be used for melee base attack, following your reasoning you should be able to sneak attack with it.

If a feat to allow a different weapon to be used with rogue abilities and powers doesn't appear, it will be because, "Rogues use light blades."

It would probably cost one feat to use your longsword with rogue powers and sneak attack - which would be the same cost for getting proficiency with a rapier. So for your wizard, your longsword proficiency would still be useless, unless you added the Eladrin racial feat to get +2 damage. That would net you an extra 1 point of damage over a rogue that bought rapier proficiency and weapon focus (at least for the heroic tier) which isn't much either.

For characters with powers based upon a weapon or weapon type, such a feat would be more worthwhile, as it would let them avoid needing to do a weapon swap and/or let them use a shield (or second implement). So if you go the Wizard of the Spiral Tower route, a use-this-weapon-with-rogue-stuff feat would look a little better.

"That one paragon path" Wizard of the Spiral Tower *ahem* Kicks serious butt!
