Is this combo as broken as I think it is?

Aha, ok. I had seen it more like the globe spells, which allow spells to be cast through but not inside the area. Seems to work different then. Ok, it is antimagic after all. ;)

But instantenous conjurations work, right? So, you can still blast the wizard with orbs, for example.

Should be. Instantaneous conjurations can't be dispelled or disjoined, so I assume they are unaffected by AMF as well. Fortuantely for him, the shaped spell allows his own defensive items and spells to work, so if he has a ring of protection, etc. it still counts.

BTW, if you don't want to waste your time with a level of archmage, the Exraordinary Spell Aim feat from CAdv will allow anyone who can cast AMF to shape it around them.

To answer the question in the post, ya it's pretty broken. Plenty of things will still affect you, but sooooo much stuff will be blocked by your AMF that it isn't even funny. This little trick alone is enough reason to take the ESA feat.

So he could have Protection from Arrows up (or something similar) and he would be safe from just about all ranged attacks. That still doesn't prevent somebody from just walking up and smacking him, though. And he would be unable to affect any foes in melee range of himself with magic.

Not quite. Magical arrows, for example, would have their magic suppressed by the AMF, but the magic would return as soon as they left it (ie. when they hit the wizard).

This is why I hate the orb spells. What the heck is an orb of force, if not magic? Force isn't some solid object that can exist independantly. Throwing an orb of force through an anti magic field is just so ridiculous it boggles my mind.

They're evocations in my game.

If a high level Wizard wants to shape an area through which he cannot cast spells at his enemies, why exactly should I object to this?

Sure it is a cute trick with which to catch the unwary, but it is not ultimately very powerful.

Less cute with shapechange. I mean it is true that a wizard wouldn't normally benefit from an AMF, but if he ever wants to melee, this is the way to do it.
