Is This Ring Broken?

Intelligent ring of sanctuary, continuous effect. I haven't worked out the price yet, but assuming you could get something done to improve the DC, would the cost be such that it would balance out the tricks you would be able to attempt?

Making it continuous is not bad as long as the Intelligent portion of it cannot "recast the Sanctuary" on a round in which the caster attacks (i.e. no attacks followed by Sanctuary in the same round).

Otherwise, it is no more abusive than any other Intelligent item that can cast spells (which by the way is basically abusive).

Intelegent casting rings are kind of rough, but they have a limit to how often they can cast the spell.

The sanctuary has to drop if the player attacks that round (untill their next non-offensive round), even if they don't have to activate it.

In one campaign, the GM gave me an intellegent bow that could cure serious 3 times a day. I think that was more a way to keep my low HP wizard from dying, as well as a balance to a lack of a true pure cleric in a 4 player campaign. I've only used it in a BBEG combat and hense, was one of the only 4 out of 8 players and NPCs to survive (We waterwalked to try to gain supprise, and the octopuss one of the head BBEGs had controlled was supprisingly much more effective than the GM had planned it to be).

1. But would you rule it that way? I had a discussion about this with Patryn that went on for days; it boiled down to "can an intelligent item delay its action, in the face of text that says it acts on its owner's round?" My interpretation was no; Patryn's interpretation was, since they "act as NPCs," yes.

2. Why is that automatically abusive? The DM controls it.

Well, we're talking about two different magical rings, here.

One of them is tricksy (can Invis at will). The other is nonviolent (can Sanctuary at will).

I don't think the Sanctuary ring would appreciate being used in such a fashion ... :D
