Getting Dissed by the Big Kahuna

so you introduced a house rule on the availablity and price of standard DMG items and didn't tell anyone until it came into play... and then stated it as a obvious thing instead of a houserule... and its annoying your player.
I already have a house rule on this matter, but it could always use further clarification ... especially after this latest round of whining. Furthermore, I never said anything about pricing.

Hide and Move Silent checks typically outstrip Spot and Listen even without magic items in the mix ....
Frankly, that's just your opinion; it works both ways, depending on what skill points you spend.

There is no such organization, either in canon descriptions ... or, more importantly, my game.

Potion Semantics

As for them being used to steal and assassinate, I disagree. Magic is magic.
I must disagree. After all, there is no logical reason that a good community would tolerate the open sale of evil magic, like a darkskull for instance.

But why would he need to HIDE when he is INVISIBLE...?
It's just being cautious. After all, there are ways of countering invisibility. Besides, I believe that an elixir of hiding also lasts longer.

There's a difference between items that let you avoid being detected and those that are actively evil.

But DnD has defined the technology level regarding alchemical inflamable materials: it's called alchemist fire. Which anyways is probably better than anything involving soap and lamp oil :D
Oh, I agree. I roll my eyes whenever I heard the "I'm going to discover gunpowder!" type comments, regardless of game. But I wasn't asking to be snarky; it actually does make a difference. Is this supposed to be a standard fantasy, or a more faithful "Middle Ages" adaptation? Lamp oil and soap may not be napalm per se, but I bet it does burn pretty well, and it doesn't take a genius to figure it out, either (not that I've ever tried to ignite such a concoction personally, mind you.) I'd think a reasonable DM wouldn't allow that to act like napalm, but wouldn't just over-rule the whole idea either.

Black-Market Items

You bet; I should have used a different example. ;)

My point is ... societies don't openly sell things that their authorities would disapprove of.

In most areas, that includes items that are used for assassination, subterfuge, and thievery.

Now, I am not saying that these items do not exist. I am not even saying that they would be all that hard to find. I'm just saying that you cannot get them from legitimate dealers.
