"It's not a question of where it grips it..."

I once had a 2ndEd game in which the player of the thief (Hah! Yes! A thief! Not a namby "Rogue!" :p ) wanted to know if he could carry around some soap.

Okay, I said. Usually I take my PCs' cleanliness for granted, but if he wanted to buy soap, well, it was on the equipment list.

All was fine until the party needed to get through a locked door. The thief turned to me and said, "I take out my soap, stick it into the lock to make a mold of the key, pull it back out, and then make a copy of the key out of wood with my trusty dagger."

"No," I said. "You've got lockpicks; roll against your Open Locks skill."

This went on for a while. I firmly believe that any kind of soap will not hold up to that kind of treatment. You could cram it into a lock, sure, but when you pulled it out of the lock it would all crumble and most of it would remain inside.

I think I had as much frustration as I had with him because he was constantly looking for ways around the rules; I think he felt that if he used the rules and rolled the dice, he would fail.

In hindsight, I should have let him do it that way, but given him a bonus to Open Locks and still made him roll.

This story is second-hand, but it's the best one I know. A player I know of - who has a tendency to focus more on the rules than on roleplaying - was with a party that fell through a hole into a subterranean lake. The fall was about 30 feet. The player wanted to know if he could tie a rope to his quarterstaff and throw the staff up through the hole so he could climb out. He wanted to throw the staff 30 feet straight up, while he was floating in water.

Thank you for giving me a whole three minutes to respond, and thanks for calling me stupid too. :D

I began writing my first post before you did your double post but submitted it after you did your double post. That's why they're lined up one after the other. It was all in good jest you know. I think I have another book here somewhere. It's called "Tome of leadership and influence". Maybe I should just go read it to make my jokes clearer... :p

His point is not the same as mine; he completely disagreed with my interpretation.

I was not refering to Virgil's post as it was not posted when I posted mine... Anyway. Will you drop the issue or should I just believe jokes are not allowed on this board?

I use a magic system that allows the players to create their own spells (elements of magic system). In the last thread I created, I was complaining about a character whom wanted to create a fireball spell that she could fire at the ground and effect the enemies around the area with no reflex save to them because "she chose to do a ranged touch attack on the ground".

Even the newbies at my game had their mouth's open in awe and the idocitiy of suggesting such a thing.

My answer to that might be: "That's very clever. Make an Open Locks roll to copy the key."

But if you want to be mean, or you know, realistic: "That's very clever. Make a Craft (woodworking) roll to copy the key."

Joking is certainly allowed on this board.
In the future though, you migh want to include a few of these :) :D :) :D to make sure people understand you're joking.

Otherwise, even the most innocent comments can come off a little snarky. :D
