It's Official - I've Lost 40 Pounds!

I started my diet on May 1st at 204. Today I reached the milestone of 40 pounds lost! How you may ask? The tried and true method of counting calories and excersising.

I realized that I was taking in 300-500 calories a day just from the amount of soda I was drinking (Coke and Mt.Dew). I don't drink coffee, so I switched to diet iced tea with Splenda for my caffeine. I've since acquired a taste for some diet sodas (never thought I'd say that!). Favs are Tab, Pepsi Jazz (Strawberries and Cream), and Diet Coke with Splenda.
I also cut out my 1-2 beers a night and my weekend Southern Comfort. I try to take in low-no liquid calories.

I cut back my total caloric intake to 1000 a day. A bit extreme, but I did clear it with my doctor first. My plan went like this: breakfast 200 calories, lunch 300 calories, and supper (including evening snack) 500 calories. Over the last few weeks I could see the end in sight so I added a mid-morning and afternoon 50 calorie snack as well as a full 100 calorie snack at night. I'll soon be adding 700 calories a day to level off and maintain my weight.

I eat a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables (uncooked mostly) including lots of salads. I try to eat meat with every meal as I found I feel fuller if I do.

I cut way back on breads and starchy foods. These are just full of calories. You do need resome though, and half a sandwich is better than none.

I drink 1 liter of water in the morning. This really helps fill me up and prevents me from eating when I'm really just thirsty. I always drink at least 20 ounces of liquid with every meal and snack, usually more. I do run to the bathroom a lot, but it's a trade off I'm willing to make.

I gave up "cheat" meals. Homemade burgers or pizza instead of take out.

I walk 2 miles a day during my lunch hour. If it was too hot or it rained I'd either get up early or walk when I got home (outside or treadmill). I found that an MP3 player with talk programs works awesome if you can't find someone to walk with (I've acquired an appreciation for old time radio - especially CBS radio Mystery Theater). I'd like to start a program of light weights now just to tone a bit.

Anyway, no one here at work seems to have noticed so I just wanted to tell someone! :) I'd be happy to help with advice if any one else is trying to lose the old gut.

Diet sodas? Yuck. But I suppose one must do what one must do. And after all ones' tastes can change. I only recently developed a taste for Guacamole ... but not straight. It still has to be mixed in with other things.

Took me a long time to appreciate raw tomatoes too until I was introduced to the tremendous Bulgarian recipe for cucumber-onion-tomato salad seasoned with olive oil, pepper, salt and a few other light herbs. Needless to say I have appreciated raw tomatoes ever since.

Isn't it interesting how fickle the taste buds and our bodily "demands" can be at times?

Congratulations! That's great to hear!

I don't keep any soda around the house, as I prefer water anyway. I should eat pizza less, though...

Hooray for success! 40lbs is something to be proud of.

I'm trying to go from 212 to 150. 25 days in and I'm down...3lbs. It's not much, but it's a start. Baby steps.

Wow, Man that is way cool!!! Congrats! You should be very proud of that. :D

I would love to drop thirty pounds, but can't seem to find the time. :(
