Downer is a strange and not very funny comic strip that's been in Dungeon Magazine for several years IIRC. I've only read it in a few issues, as I don't find it to be worthwhile (though the idea of a mindflayer who hates eating brains is amusing, if nothing else; this illithid is one of Downer's traveling companions in the Underdark, from what little I've been able to gather of the strip's awful set-up and style). Any comic you can't start reading at any random point and find some small interest in, and then understand reasonably well after a few strips, is not worth reading at all, IMO.

Don't forget that the artwork makes your eyes bleed. Strangely I like his art in the rest of Dungeon, but it just doesnt work for me in a strip.

I've been a fan from the first strip when Downer killed a bard. Now that's the right way to start a story!

The art is part of what draws me to the strip. I'm glad Erik stuck to his guns in keeping this one.

I tried to like Downer. I choked my way through each month, hoping that I would some day find it entertaining. I have given up, the last couple of strips I have just skipped altogether and I likely won't be returning. Some may enjoy it, such is your choice and I won't condemn you for it. For me, it's just a couple of pages of wasted space in Dungeon.

Same here. I really want to like it, but it's just incomprehensible. I certainly don't begrudge anyone their enjoyment of the strip, but for me it's just a couple pages I skip every month as well.

I'd much rather see something else on those two pages. Something (whether comic or article) that's more accessible to a wider range of Dungeon's readers. It's not a deal breaker for me by any means, but those two pages are valuable real estate.

QFT.

Downer's unique in a lot of ways, and that seems to turn people off. I'm not sure exactly why people expect it to be a funny-ha-ha strip, since it's obviously not, although it has a dry humour to it. It's the first thing I read in every Dungeon.

I'm another Downer-hater. I tried to like it, and I keep reading it hoping that it'll get better. There are great concepts in there (interesting locations, like that swamp city that... uh... I think they're in; a modron/slaad hybrid thingy; etc), but the execution and story-telling is just dreadful.

Nevertheless, it's the first thing I read each month - simply because I still hope that something good will be in there, and to try to remember what the heck happened before and how it ties into the rambling mess I'm reading now!
