Jack Chalker has Passed Away

He was one of my favorite authors for a number of years. He was also at my first Philcon which helped to make it a real high point in my life as I think "The Birth of Flux & Anchor " had just come out which was probably I think my favorite book by him.

Sad news...

I'm fondly recalling an old high-school friend half-begging, half-threatening me to read []The Four Lords of the Diamond[/i] books because he liked them so much...

Man, that's sad. I never read his Well of Souls books but I very much liked his Dancing Gods series, so much that I put elements of it in my high school & college games.

Ah, yes one of his greatest moments. The last great unnamed magic sword in the universe gets named "IRVING" and everyone is like "You can't call it that, magic swords have to be called Stormbringer or Excaliber or something". "But I like the name Irving. It's what I named my son."

Now that's a damn shame :(

Chalker was the first author I read in my teens who was very clearly not "Normal Old Sci-Fi"

I think I'll hit the used book stores today and try and pick up a few old Chalker favorites and see if they hold up.

Godspeed Mr. Chalker.

Thanks for posting this, Gary. Very sad news. He's one of my favourites, although I've never gotten to the Well worlds books. Kinda funny -- I've read mostly his obscure stuff, and few of the famous books.

I just got my wife started on reading Chalker last week. I'll keep pimpin' him to others. He was and is one of the greats. :)

Wow, one of my favorites for many years. He was one of the few authors I invited to the sci-fi conventions I ran, and was terribly disappointed that his schedule never meshed with my conventions. Wish I'd met him, and I'm sure you were lucky to know him, Gary.

All those characters didn't die with him, though, at least not to me. They live on, forever, the true gift of a talented author.

Well Pilgrims...

Mourning the loss of a fellow is for those of us who miss him, but indeed there remains with us not only the memories but the works of the departed. There is much consolation in that.

Regards,
Gary
