Japanese Game Developers talk Next-Gen consoles

FYI, in case this is as interesting to you folks as it was to me...

In addition to the interviews, Famitsu revealed the results of a questionnaire sent to 58 developers working at 19 software companies in Japan. They first asked how the developers felt, in general, about each of the systems. The results were very positive. Of those polled 80 percent expressed positive views on the PS3. For the Wii, 99 percent took a bullish stance. Views on the Xbox 360 were somewhat more negative, with 45 percent stating they had few expectations for the console. Even so, a majority 53 percent responded positively on its prospects.

Finally, Famitsu asked for some more specific opinions. When pressed as to which console they personally wanted to own, 9 percent of the developers said Xbox 360, 42 percent PS3, and 49 percent Wii.

As for which platform they want to develop games for, only 5 percent answered Xbox, while the PS3 and Wii respectively got 32 percent and 63 percent of the votes.

On the topic of which console they thought would sell the most, the developers picked the Wii by a landslide--60 percent, compared with 37 percent and 3 percent for the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Interesting read but I noticed the bias right away.
Nintendo and Sony are Japanese companies whereas Microsoft is an American company.
Microsoft is not a big player in the Japanese market as far as consoles go so most developers in Japan are going to favor Sony and Nintendo which explains some of the negative numbers for the 360.

I think the bias is based on sales.

Developers are in the business of making money off software. Their software will sell to a subset of folks who own the hardware.

With Microsoft and Sony experiencing product shortfalls, with the PS3 launch downgraded to 500K worldwide and the Wii launch UPgraded from 1 million to 2 million units at launch, which console would you develop for?

While the X-box currently has 5 million units worldwide, the Wii will have 9 million produced by the end of the year, according to some estimates.

Again, I think it's more about numbers than nationalism. While the PS3 is having it's problems, I think it will outsell the 360 as well.

The idea that Japanese people are nationalistic doesn't wash with me. They watch our TV shows and play our national sports with great enthusiasm. There's no reason other than quality of the products and the type of games offered for their opinion on consoles.

Well, here's an interview with a fairly prominent Japanese developer (from Team Ninja of Tecmo)

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123178

Originally in French, this is someone's translation:

"About developping for the PS3 and the 360 in Japan:

- 360 is easy to develop for since you can use the same tools as when developing for Windows
- The PS3 has a japanese OS and the japanese engineers don t want to surrender to the power of Microsoft. They have this competition spirit, to create different interfaces , which symbolizes their culture.
- He doesn t think either PS3 or 360 is better than the other. The PS3 is a little more powerful, as a console launched one year later can be. The only big difference is the PS3 is japanese so japanese people prefer the PS3.
- "The PS3 is stubborn, but so am I, so it s not a problem!"

On the 360 s failure in Japan:

- Brand recognition is the main reason, Microsoft does not have a good image in Japan. They still have an OS company more than a videogames company image while Sony has a very young and modern image.
- He says he s been helping Microsoft for the last 5 years but he doesn t have the communication power to change things more.
- It s not something you can really explain rationaly.

On the japanese market in general:

- That being said, we don t know if PS3 is going to sell either. Japan is going through a crisis.
- Japanese are tired of traditional videogames and want some more lightweight and accessible games.
- The population is growing older with the decrease in natality, which prevents an important renewal of players. Which means that even when targeting adults, you sell less games because they are more exigent and less impulsive buyers."

(There's a better translation later in the thread, but that's a good summary)

I think that pretty much explains the poll results.

Yeah, I agree there's a lot of reasons why the X-box 360 is having a hard time catching on.

But all the people who just want to paint the Japanese as nationalistic irk me. They watch our movies, our TV shows and play Baseball, but at video games they draw the line?

Puhleaze.

I don't think it's necessarily nationalism, just different cultures. They like some things from the US (as you point out, baseball), they don't like others (football, for instance).

I mean, look at the top selling games in Japan. They are very different from US games (and most games popular in both Japan and the US tend to be Japanese games). And just by it's nature, the 360 tends to mostly have US games (though MS has done a lot better this time around getting more Japanese developers on board).

And like the Tecmo guy said, at least this year, the Japanse game market seems to be trending away from traditional video games in favor of stuff like Brain Training and critter raising sims. Which bodes well for the Wii, but will probably come at the expense of MS.

Right, but beyond those fantastic Japanese RPGs, their games aren't usually the top sellers over here either.

We like Halo and Project Gotham Racing.

Sure both countries like stuff like Final Fantasy but I don't think those cheerleading games on the Nintendo DS are about to break into the import market here anytime soon.
