Magic Items. Scroll of immolation. 4 potions of greater healing. Potion of gaseous form. Elvin Chain mail. Scroll Primordial Ward. Necklace of prayer beads – one of blessing, one of wind walking, one of curing. Potion of Longevity. Potion of Heroism. Dragon Slayer sword.

Our guest co-dm and die roller tonight will be Ezra.

I had an average group of five. Liu Feng (Luo) Elemental monk 13 Aasimar. Zephron Starwarden twilight cleric 13. Philip Druid 13 Tiefling. Geronimo barbarian 13 human.

Geronimo finds a secret tunnel um door and pushes through it. He dashes down he bowl depression and starts poking the tower of skulls. “Liu. I think one these move. Come here and see”.

Liu, “I don’t think that one moved.” Meanwhile they ignore the voice below the tower in the prisoner pit.

Voice, “That one moved.”

Voice 2, “No, the one to you right.”

Voice 3, “Your Military right!”

Voice 4, ‘get you hand out my mouth!”

Geronimo, “It done bit me.” Liu punches out the first flame skull. And the battle begins. Toll the dead goes off twice and Philip sickles hers.

Kharloss, “Help save us.”

Liu, “Why? I don’t know you.”

Kharloss, “We are quest items from Chapter two.”

Jarlee, “No it was from Chapter three. And mind the poison trap.” Liu punches out the second flame skull and runs to open air near the second fire bridge. Zephron spies the lever and shuts down part of trap. Philip takes out his flame skull. Ember sees the other lever and pulls it. They meet up with Liu.

Geronimo, “Are we forgetting something? That air was worst that a Marvin Fart.”

Kharloss, “Help save us.”

Liu, “Look I want take a nap, level up, and finish this dungeon tonight.”

Jarlee, “you get treasure if you rescue us.” The three prisoners were rescue and escorted to exit. Prisoner number 4 was left to his cultists fate.

The group peek around the fire bridge and see four salamanders, some fire snakes, up four waterfalls of lava steps is a young red dragon named Halinaxus. Liu flies over and starts talking to the kid dragon.

Liu, “What are your hiding behind your wings. Part the entrance to the boss fight. You did such a good job. You know once you told me your back story, I think you should join us in the upcoming boss battle. Vanfier was murder by us in session 22. You don’t want to be murdered, do you?”

Halinaxus, “I see you discovered my backstory well. But you will have to beat my dirty twenty.”

Liu, “All I got a is +2. So, 21.” Ezra just looks at her Nat 18 and wonders what happen. The dragon agrees and mentions the salamander and Efreeti from session 22. He does not mention the other encounters.

The flying eagle of Philip and Liu start the salamander fight. Which is going well until three hits and crit land on the druid. As she is making death saves a short discussion starts between Liu and Zephron on the best spell to save him.

Ember, “You heal him, I will heal him, and Liu will punch one of them out and then it will his turn again. He can take three hits if we do right.” One hit and a critical later Philip use his last shape shift of the day and flies to bridge. (Action economy and some short rest reset problems lead to some confusion of what was left for everyone to use at this part of the game.)

DM, “Look the Efreeti name from session 22, while I take three. Not finding. He is Chuckie then.”

Geronimo, “The one we who did the plate armour for my bear.”

DM, “Sure we go with that.”

Editor DM, “That was a different encounter. You never named the Efreeti and. MUSE put that hammer down.” THUMP. Muse, “Carry on writing DM. NOW!”

Geronimo, “Chuckie. Lot time not see. Did Marvin give you my gran gran gravy recipe. And I did like the buffing compound you gave me. It not as great as gran gran’s but.”

Chuckie, “Marvin was an orc, wasn’t he? I think I roasted him a week ago with a bunch of other orcs.”

Geronimo, “Has anyone seen Marvin? Any way you know we can take you, and we know some your backstory. So, join us for the fight. Persuasion right DM?”

Erza Dice Roller, “10 +2 is 12”.

Geronimo, “7 +6 is 13”. The seven to four odds don’t look good but Tier 3 crushes Tier 2 monsters. After a brief loot and sleep the group arrives at the air elemental node. The wind howls when the DM wants it too and occasionally makes it triple difficult terrain for fliers. Avoiding the spiders they find the glacier ice lake with an Italian looking chap buried under the ice.

Liu, “I use my flame fists to dig him out! Why is DM banging his head on the table?”

DM sighs, “Dante is a gentleman from a place called Italy and is serious freak out with your group.” After a half hour of talking to the npc and freaking him out as Liu is friend of Satan, the group move on.

The druid and barbarian smell the faint smell of poo. Instead of turning right they go investigate it. While they are discussing the various scat droppings, an air elemental flushes the temple above and coats the two with fresh poo.

Philip, “Why you do that?”

Air Elemental, “Why are you playing with poo and at the bottom of outhouse?”

Geronimo, “Why shouldn’t I punch you out?”

Philip, “Why not give us directions to the big boss. Persuasion 1 no modifiers.”

Air Elemental, “2 - 2 is zero. Why not try the right-hand tunnel you didn’t check out? And I can escape up the shaft. So, I going you the shaft. Bye!”

The group moves on into the stalagmite garden and into the mushroom garden. The druid spends ten minutes identifying the mushrooms. Geronimo is not happy because there are not happy making ones. They see a lake ahead of them and don’t know where to go.

Philip, “Speak with plants. You! Button you seen the big boss?”

Button, “Hey. He has taken a dump on me in a while but he came back the way you came. Not toward the lake. Not toward.”

DM, “um. Looking at the map you been drawing, the only route is through the gale tunnel. It is acrobatic 10 skill check.”

The group time their jumps well and when they land, nine air cultists are practicing their flying skills. Geronimo dons a flight suit and beats the sergeant while lapping Liu and the leader twice. Liu does get some clear instructions to boss.

Liu, “Damn it. The guy didn’t tell me about this intersection. Why are two prisoners dying? Why did we get a quest fail and what is happening”

Dm, “you just matched the persuasion roll. The prisoner was a quest from chapter 3. And the two demons are attacking you while invisible. Well, that didn’t last long.”

Group, “Why is the boss music starting?”

Liu, “I have my own boss theme. Hit it.”

Turning to second to last turn, the wind blows and the four minions trying to block the adventurers. No such luck. Fighting double triple difficult terrain Liu smartly drinks a potion of speed. He dashes into the boss chamber.

Yan-C-Bin, “Give us a kiss you beautiful hunk of man.”

Liu, “No. 22 beats your save.”

Yan-C-Bin, “Fine. You can’t hit my 22 AC. Hey no hitting when monologuing. Fine. Summon Air Elemental. Order the attacks on the barbarian carrying the relic. And HASTE. Beat my 24 AC.”

Geronimo. “Miss. Hit. Hit. Miss. Damage Reduction. You can’t touch me.”

Yan-C-Bin, “Ha my legendary has reset. Give me a kiss.”

Geronimo, “AN 8.”

Yan-C-Bin, “You fail you have ZERO HIT POINTS.” Geronimo shoves her finger up the monster’s nose.

Geronimo, “WRONG! Relentless RAGE. I have 1 hit point left. No. Make that 26 points.”

Yan-C-Bin, “You forgot one thing. My side goes before it will be your turn.” A few hits on the barbarian and a one heal. “Fracking die already.”

Geronimo, “You know something. While I will take three attacks of opportunity, if I go around, you guys. I am only 19 feet from the portal. 16 to hit with Wind Vane. The spear and boss are sucked through the portal.

Ember, “Surrender on my turn elementals.”

Elementals, “We tried but those meanies Liu punched us in the face and Geronimo shot me in the butt with a roman candle.”

That all folks.

DM Notes. The End of the Session. The End of the Book. K/D ratio 639 to 1. 27 sessions that matches Quest of the Infinite Staircase, Storm’s King Thunder, and Mad Mage. But is 1 more death that Quest. You leveled up ever 6 campaign days. 2 towns totally destroyed. 1 town with some scuff marks.

We do three tier modules in January to get you up to tier four. Then decide on a new book. Out of the Abyss. Dragon Delves. Adventures in Faerun. Adventures with Astarion. Welcome to the Hell Fire Club. And any others.

The book review will be up next week.

Princes of the Apocalypse Review

This is after play review using Adventure League rules, guidance V 15.1 plus the more updated versions. And a mixture of 2014 and 2024 pcs and monsters.

TLDR My sanity for a flow chart. Buy under $25. 3 stars. Take notes and cross reference stuff.

You know it bad when you first start googling the book and a flowchart comes up near the top. I supplemented my game play with Sean McGovern’s “A Guide to Princes of the Apocalypse” from DMs Guild. And a good flowchart I found on the net.

For experience DMS only.

After level 8 the pcs begin to curb stomp monsters even if you adjust using the Adventure League rules. The tier 3 chapter is push over as only 3 tier 3 monsters are involved.

The layout is bad with you having to go to chapter 5 for the lower level quests before the main quests. Once you choose a reason for the main quests, you will need to cross reference pages. Go ahead and write in the book what page the quest hint gives to the actual quest page.

Another problem is some quest hints are buried inside a paragraph of a main villain description.

The good is the bad guys have a fight back plan. Every so often a scripted response to the players actions is given. Take out two places, an ambush is planned. Or other proactive things.

As this the third adventure book, if you are using the 2024 Players Handbook, or other add on books, the pcs will curb stomp some encounters.

Its got sone good ideas and dungeons. I've used it a lot for NPCs, dungeons etc. I ran the lvl 9 dungeon in 5.5 at level 6.

Level 1-5 is also decent

Fun with Fey Session

Day 1

PC Killed 0 Monsters Killed 10 Villains Captured 4 Villains Escaped 1.

Start Time 6:28 PM End Time 9:27 PM

Take 10 down time days. A level. 2,000 GP

Magic Items Cloak of Displacement, Emerald of Poison Resistance, scroll of Thunderstep.



I had a very strong group of seven. Phillip druid 13 Tiefling. Ember Life Cleric 13 human. Geronimo Barbarain 14 half-orc. Zephron Skywalker Twilight Cleric 14 human. Mugan Druid 13 human. Ardor paladin 14 elf. Diener Paladin 6 warlock 5 goliath.

When the group finally found the archdruid Kelandrakix, he was eating popcorn using his beard as a napkin. Seven empty cans of seasonal popcorn lied empty around him. He had a tussle with fey near the Morcant Burt tree in the Quivering Forest. Fey portals are a frequent thing in the forest. However, since the fey kicked his ass, he is blocked from using anything greater than third level spells. You job is find they fey and get the blocked removed.

The forest is wet, damp, and cold and with normal effects of people are watching they were not ready when Jeny Greenteeth smiled at them. Her teeth glowed green in the day.

Geronimo, “Here deary you forgot to brush.” Taking the toothbrush, she shoved into her ear to get a good layer of wax and started brushing. “Thanks. I have two things for you. Some riddles and …”

Philip, “The first answer is beep.”

Greenteeth, “Answer these four riddles and solve the.”

Phillip, “The second answer is beep.”

Greenteeth, “The question. Or face my”

Phillip, “The third answer is beep. And why are some of the stones green. Oh, they are highlighting.”

Greenteeth, “rage! Well go ahead and interrupt me.”

Phillip, “I am having trouble with last one. Maybe the group will help me.”

Group, “Quit hogging the handout. The fourth answer is beep, and the solution is beep.”

Jeny knew she been beat and reward the group with four emeralds, one which if swallowed protects against poison. They wave bye and move on.

A few hours later. They are buzzed by four quicklings. A huge monolith erupts out the ground spinning around. They see a earth glyph, water glyph, and fire glyph. “Think fast. Cast high. It is elementary. Or maybe die!”

Mugen, “Is that our only clue?”

DM, “Yes, and potty break again. Okay what do you do?”

Phillip, “Well since plant growth deals with all four elementals by.” (And this where the table should be recorded by someone. Because it did baffle the DM with BS.)

Ember and Zephron didn’t baffle the dm and their spells were allowed to be withdrawn. Three elemental glyphs fall to the ground. The air elemental myrmidon steps out the stone and punches Diener in the face. And great fun was had.

An hour later they heard 90s dance music. Some dryads and pixies are dancing the day away. The Kelandrakix bellies up to bar.

Mugan, “You know fey court often trick you into drinking and keep you for a year.”

Kelandrakix, “Hey being a kept man. With four different dryads. That one for each season. And I will love to season their flowers. Besides what they going to take away more spell slots?”

Mugan, “But I am saying. Hey. No hands on the body without asking.”

Dryad, “Come dance with me.”

Mugan, “No. I don’t like the 90s”

Dryad, “Come dance with me and my friends.”

Mugan, “I don’t feel like dancing.”

Dryad, “come dance with me and the unicorn.”

Zephron, “I have never seen such a lovely unicorn. I am in.”

Dryad, “I suggest you dance with me.’

Mugan, “I suggest your charm dc should be higher. Okay. Kill the pixies. KO the ladies. And destroy the jukebox.”

Kelandrakix, “DIBS on the beers.” The fight takes a few seconds and this is the day the music died in the forest. After getting the archdruid out of bathroom, they move on.

Ardor, “Look up in the air!”

Diener, “It is not a plane!”

Ardor, “Two flying purple Barney! And they are hungry. High Hoe Silver my flying mount.”

Mugan, “Earth bind the second one.”

Geronimo, “I am going kill that one and have a huge drumstick!”

Barney 1, “Quick shielding. How can a monster get on a kill on when you are in the low AC 20s!”

Barney 2, “Like this NAT 20 First of the night and dirty 20. Mumm good. I love barbarian in the morning.”

Ember, “Actually it is afternoon.”

Geronimo, “What you mean I can’t see? And get disadvantage on my swings. I pour my lamp oil out and light with my torch!”

Ardor, “Dirty 20 Smite!” The flying Barney turns into a half dress archmage elf and face plants into the ground. Barney 2 barfs up the barbarian.

Geronimo, “See you can hurt me.”

Barney 2, “Does 26 hits?”

Geronimo, “Yes. Dirty 23 for 15. What you mean an elf mage spits me out. They don’t like meat sticks.”

DM, “Scene skip. And bath room break. You finally arrive at the tree. Two summer Eladrin see the archdruid and shoot arrows at him.”

Group, “Silence, Insect plague, ice storm, toll the dead, toll the dead,” The Eladrin break through the first set of spells before being cut down by the fighters. As the bodies fall the archdruid starts clapping.

Kelandrakix, “Thank you for today’s entertainment. See you. Wouldn’t want to be you.” He drops the cash and teleports away. It was a con job.

DM Notes. Remember to level up. You can spend 10 downtime days to level up. The Princes group should be level 15 after tonight. We have two more pick up tier 3 games and then we start a book. Get your votes in now. Especially so I can start prepping.
