As for the Fiend Folio... count on it. That and the cover of the old D&D Expert module, X1 - The Isle of Dread.

coolness! :) didn't he also have additional work in the old DDG? i think a picture of the lizard man god comes to mind, for one...

And who are you mad at, Flexor? All frowny smilies looks rather angry, especially given the happy smiley in my post, if that's what you're objecting to.

Sorry I lost it for a second when Psion said he didn't like EO.

Oh, come on - it's not like he said he preferred Tony DiTerlizzi over Erol Otus!

Then we'd have to stone him for heresy. :D

Seriously, I always liked Jeff Dee's work in the old days. Anyone know what his current status is these days? Alive, Dead, still working in fantasy art?

Jeff Dee is my all time fave D&D artist.w/ Bill Willingham a close second, and AFAIC they ARE and always will be the look fo D&D to me.

I think some of Jeff's best D&D work was in Q1 & the Rogues Gallery. He has one pic of a Golem (IIRC) in Q1 smashing a MU in the face with a mace (hee hee..that ryhmed funny) that is just excellent. Some other great pics in that mod too. He was really the first artist to get away from the pointy-hat gandalf type wizards. His Wizards were always wearing some wierd hats or had a really cool set orf robes, etc, and had the spellcasting hand gestures down pat (his clerics too). He made D&D look "real" to me.

And while I cannot stand 3E rasta halflings, Ialways liked Dee's "adventuring hobbits".. ala Blodgett and the pic from the 81 Expert book. Really, the LOtR movies are pretty close to that ideal at least for the younger hobbits (except Sam)

And the Paladin & Illusionist from the Rogues Gallery were way cool..and...

I'll stop now.. :D

His halflings are great. I DESPISE the 3e Halfling and have changed it back to the old way. So that look is pretty good. Maybe a little chubbier, at least for non adventuring halflings.

In case anyone is interested, the legendary Erol Otus has done the cover for the HackMaster module, Descent Into The Netherdeep, which is that game's version of Descent Into the Depths of the Earth. It's OT, but I thought this might be a good place to mention it.

Cool, I was wondering what had become of ol' EO. Does he have a website of any kind?

Back on topic, Jeff Dee was definitely my fave artist back in the day. His depictions of the Melnibonean & Nehwon gods in the original DDG were great. I was never a big fan of Erol Otus back then, funny enough. Now he's one of my favorites and I find that Dee's work doesn't resonate the way it used to.

Course, when I was really young, I hated Jack Kirby's art (comic book artist for the two people who might not know). Now I recognize the King for who he is and am ashamed of my younger, ignorant past. While we're on the subject, same goes for Bob Dylan. There's something to be said for growing up. Not much, but something

Oooh, tough call, as I don't think either one deserves the praise they get.

But at least I can think of 2 DiTerlizzi pictures I like... which beats the 1 Otus pic I like. And it's sort of a special case...

Thanks for posting this Turgenev.
I have actually stumbled past your site a few times in searches for Jeff Dee art. I have it book-marked now.
Jeff Dee is my all time favorite D&D artist (followed by Willingham and Roslof - I do like Otus and DiTerlizzi a lot as well, but those first three make me think D&D more than anyone else).
You are performing a much needed service, and I thank you.
