I don't think this is true at all, based on the number of companies moving away from d20.
 

Undoubtedly D20 (3.5) has a larger market share than C&C.

But in this case, TLG will also be tapping a nostalgia vein. In a recent EN world poll (here) about 30% of respondents began gaming before 1980, which was precisely the period in which JG was at its peak (in fact I remember lusting after JG material in the late '70s, since it was hard to find in my area). While I have no crystal ball, my suspicion is that some of those folks will tempted by a new Wilderlands edition - regardless of system. Of course, some may not. Still, I'd have to think that the Trolls had at least considered this.

My perceptions may be different than others - I am always attracted first to settings, regardless of system. I'd buy new Wilderlands stuff if it were Tri-Stat, or RQ, or whatever. And then, if I didn't like the system, I'd tweak it to my own tastes. As I said - others may well feel differently.

Our gaming group gave up on 3rd last month and switched to C&C after almost 6 years....so this is good news.


This fact that I can use 1st/2nd AD&D Monster Manuals/Settings on the fly with little or no conversion made the switch easy.

One tidbit for those not familiar with C&C - it is d20 based, a system which is intended to marry some of the better ideas of 3.0 with a more rules-lite simplicity of 1e AD&D - i.e. a hybrid (ascending AC for instance). I for one love it, especially as it ENCOURAGES individual adaptation and house rule add-ons to suit the individual game. To me it is what 3rd ed. D&D should have been... :cool:

The TLG products also seem to be growing from a mere niche to a wider audience, while WOTC products seem to be going from the widest audience to narrower lately. That trend is what perhaps negates the "market share" discussions above, especially as NG is probably as unsure of "official" D&D's direction as the rest of the people on these boards.

Er, Rule Zero is the very first thing printed in my D&D core books. Hard to get much more encouraging than that.

Hi everyone!

James Mishler here, President and Main Man of Adventure Games Publishing...

I thought I'd make a few points vis a vis concerns...

1) I chose C&C as the platform for the Wilderlands of High Adventure because it has an expanding fan base, whereas d20 has a shrinking fanbase. The future of "d20-bsed" games is in branded systems like C&C, Mutants & Masterminds, and so forth... and C&C also fits in best with classic JG style.

2) That said, fan-designed d20 System conversions will be encouraged, and available on the Adventure Games Publishing website (www.adventuregamespubs.com), which is not, as yet, up and running... ideally, next week.

3) Adventure Games Publishing is a new company, and currently consists of myself. I have licensed the Wilderlands from Judges Guild and Castles & Crusades from Troll Lords. Necromancer Games is not involved, though I spoke with Bill briefly yesterday, and he thought it sounded pretty cool. AFAIK, NG will still be publishing Tegel Manor, and another company will be publishing d20 conversions of classic Judges Guild modules... though that announcement won't be for a few weeks yet (I can't say anything more than that, really, as I am not involved in that project). The paths of the two separate projects will not cross, at least, not as of this point...

4) I will be making the official announcement at Bob Bledsaw's "Death & Resurrection of Judges Guild" 10:00 seminar on Saturday (Hyatt Canyon Room), and be available for Q&A during the seminar.

5) The five High Class books are entirely optional... all the new classes will have "default standard" C&C classes that can be used in place of the new, optional class. For example, the Amazon can be used as a simple Fighter, or the Priest would simply be a Cleric, while the Necromancer would just be a Wizard. Even the various Psychic classes will be able to be switched out with Wizards or Clerics... though the Psychic book will add a whole new system of power to the C&C mix.

How much new material is in these, and how much is cleaning up the (admittedly pretty low-end) typefaces, etc. of the originals?

Any chance of this expanding beyond the Wilderlands to, say, Dark Tower and such?
