Gary's birthday should be Gygax Day - but GM's Day should stay as it is: two holidays are not too much for the man who gave us all the stuff dreams are made of!!!
The Cardinal makes a good point. A Gary Gygax Day should reflect the man's life more than his death. Two holidays are better than one.

Still, I would support renaming GM's Day to be Gary Gygax Day.

July 27th is a better day, I think. Admittedly I am a little biased here, but ...

A lot of people put a lot of work into getting GM's day up and running, and I am pleased to say that I think it has been a success. With all due respect to Gary, or perhaps because of my respect for Gary, I fear that the GM's Day aspect of the March 4th might be obscured if the 'name' of the day was changed to be 'Gary Gygax Day'. Especially as a tribute to Gary that could just as easily, and perhaps more appropriately, be the date of his birth - just like Martin Luther King day, for instance.

In any case, as people have noted, GM's Day will forever be associated with his passing, regardless of it's name.

Gary passed on GMs Day. That will be the day to honor him. That's just the way it is.

I don't see much value in arguing about it or trying to swim upstream against Fate.

I've seen quite a few people make this point, so I wanted to offer a different perspective.

In Judaism, when we celebrate a yartzeit, the day of someone's passing, it is a happy occasion. We remember the person on that day, take actions in honor of that person, even drink and eat in celebration of that person, because all these things keep them alive and help their soul elevate higher and higher.

Gary's yartzeit will always be GM's Day. On that day we should remember him and his legacy, play and teach others to play in his honor, and eat (munchies) and drink (soda) in celebration - that is how we'll keep him alive.
