Jury Duty

that will be one impressively well hung jury.

Not gonna go there, Diaglo. you perv!!!

Hmm, wasn't there a lady who wore her star trek uniform to jury duty on the White Water jury every day. Maybe you could do something like that except for roleplaying... Just a thought.

She desperately needed a life! Big time! I only pulled that stunt for my driver's license pic.

Not in my area. I get reimbursed for mileage, too. And I get paid leave for jury duty from work.

But I haven't been called since I moved here. I was on a jury once; a civil case where someone was suing for injuries after being rear-ended by some spoiled college girl princess jabbing on her cell-phone or something like that (maybe that was before cell phones became really big; can't remember now.)

My wife, on the other hand, got selected to be on a murder trial in Detroit, which was a nasty business for her.

And hey! We've got a surgeon in our group, he's a good guy! :p
I was called once, but got out of it. (I'm glad I'm a student)

Are surgeons being good guys surprising? :uhoh: I remember the first time I met a French guy I was like, "Wow, he's actually nice!" :heh:

I suspect employers aren't mandated to reimburse your for jury duty (though this may vary from state to state), because the state's supposed to pay you (though the rate is pathetic, and some states, like CA, only start paying you more than mileage after the first day).

But it's definitely not a stratightforward hourly vs. salaried thing (and I'm sure about this, as I'm hourly, and I get compensated for up to 7 days of jury duty per year). If there's a split within a company, it's likely to be full-time/part-time, not hourly/salaried (my position became hourly because of oddities in CA state law; I used to be salaried, but my benefits didn't change).
Very true. I was working as a waiter, so they'll find any way they can to not pay you. Yuck.

I first heard about her on "Trekkies" documentary, and they portrayed her as courageous, but crazy. Everything that Trek promotes is what she did: community service, fairness, etc (through being a juror). What they DIDN'T say is that she was dismissed due to talking with press.

I served on a jury in a civil case a few years ago. The plaintiff was suing a man who injured him in a car accident. We went a couple days, but the Chief Justice of New Jersey died. So the judge asked the parties to settle, so we wouldn't have to come back after the upcoming weekend.

my wife got called up for jury duty in Baltimore... and we had been living in GA for 4 years at the time. they even had the right address. it wasn't forwarded mail.

yeah, i know some surgeons. 1 in 1000 are nice.

I don't like the way we handle juries.... and I hope I never have to serve on one. I'll be quick to tell anyone who has any authority just what I think of the jury system....

(then I'll probably be arrested.... )

Also, having worked for 5 years in a clinical testing lab, I can assure you that Diaglo's right about the surgeons.

I was called only once before and I wound up on a jury in a drug case. The trial lasted one day and then we "deliberated" for two more days, hung all the while. The judge finally relented after two days and ended things with no verdict.

Nowadays I doubt I'd be asked to serve if called. My business requires that I work with LOTS of lawyers all the time and I stand a better than average chance of having either the plaintiff or defendant as a customer.

My business also requires that I meet a lot of surgeons and I'd say that only about half of them think they're God. ;)
