Just because the Warforged is mentioned in a playtest doesn't mean it's in the PHB

No-one care about the Elan. At all.

Huh? Hold the press!

I mean, oooh, it's dude with funny-coloured eyes, -2 cha and some extra PPs.

And a couple of really useful abilities usable with said PP.

Only PPs don't even exist yet in 4E

And that's the real reason no one wonders about elans: They're a psionic race, and psionics won't be in the first three core books.

It's not the same sort of campaign-rocking stuff as huge Robot-men who are immune to about 20% of the threats PCs face. I think people are mostly scared that if Warforged are in the PHB1, they'll be in any campaign-setting that gets significantly modified with 4E, like, say, the FR

Since they are apparently trying to butcher the FR, I guess adding warforged there doesn't make them any worse.

I'm not saying they're bad, I'm just saying no-one cares a whole lot, not even the people who like them. What would people do if the Elan vanished from 4E entirely (unlikely)? You'd make human psionic-types, get the GM to agree that they were Elans, and get on with it ;)

Actually you could do the same with _every_ non-human race:
dwarf? below-average height, broad-shouldered, bearded human
elf? androgyneous, slim human
halfling? (very) small human (if D&D had stats for children, just use those...)
gnome? see dwarf, except smaller
tiefling? human with a horned helmet ;)
etc.

Seriously: You don't really need any of the non-human races to play D&D.

Okay, what's the right speed for jumping to conclusions?

Tom Smykowski: It was a "Jump to Conclusions" mat. You see, it would be this mat that you would put on the floor... and would have different CONCLUSIONS written on it that you could JUMP TO.
Michael Bolton: That's the worst idea I've ever heard in my life, Tom.
Samir: Yes, this is horrible, this idea.
That was the first thought to cross my mind.

Well, there's levels of caring. Elan --> 1. Gnome --> 3. Dwarf --> 8. Human --> 11.

What do the numbers actually mean?

Does it mean that your heart beats faster if you think about elans (because they're 1st priority) but don't care much about humans schmumans, or that Elans only recevie low-level caring, but humans could have three attacks if they were fighters?

The problem's probably that they didn't get a lot of spot light: A racial entry in the (fairly recent) XPH, some feats in Complete Psionic, and maybe a couple of d20/OGL books, without any elans appearing in any best-selling novel or TV shows, while other races are big movers and shakers in big campaign settings and get exclusive movie deals and all that.

Doesn't have anything to do with needing anything. It's about wanting.
