This is the old red booklet, with the Erol Otus cover with the green dragon and the spear-wielder, not the later red box with the rules divided into two separate books.

Thats the set I learned from. I love the art in it, and Otus will forever be my favorite RPG artist.
Simple now, but when I got it I couldn't figure out how you were supposed to play. Eventually I met some other kids in school who had the set as well. It still took us a while to figure out why all the monsters in the rulebook weren't included in the adventure, so we used to just put different monsters into the caves of chaos and work our way through them over and over again. :D
Eventually I got the Expert Set, and someone else got the AD&D Monster Manual, and the addiction began. I have no idea where my original sets are, although I have a few loose pages in a binder with lots of old maps.

Ove the past couple years I've picked up all the old boxed sets in good condition on ebay. If you keep checking eventually a set will come up in great shape and will sell for only a few $.

All weapons doing the same damage?

I don't remember that either - but hey.

ANyway doesn't Legendary Journeys (the 'new' Gygax game) also have all weapons doing the same damage modified by Crits or something?

I started with the red box set and two bullywugs and a carrion crawler! Also tossed up between a Thief and a Hobbit

...off of e-bay in a (beat up) basic box with an original set of dice with crayon still in baggie.

An original set of dice WITH the crayon still in the baggie? Holy moley! I need to start browsing E-bay.

i have this set, box and everything, things is, i totally forgot where i put it! i have my stash of old 2nd edition books. now i gotta find my stash of basic stuff.

my basic stash has both "old" and "new" stuff. "new" being things like the dnd cyclopedia, which is a compilation of all the rules for basic dnd, except on how to play immortals (it gives rules on how to become one, but not play one) and the "thunder rift" campaign setting and modules that they were still releasing for basic edition when 2nd edition was on the verge of changing to 3rd.

Actually, one of the most formative books for me was the original (single-book) D&D Expert Set, with that picture by Jeff Dee of a Human Fighter talking to a pair of halflings. THAT is what halflings should look like! Man I LOVE that pic!

You know, I had the opportunity to pick up the hardcover Rules Cyclopedia while I was at Half Price. It was something like $14.

I couldn't do it. Not because it cost too much--$14 is a bit steep for a book I'm not likely to actually use, but if I'd really wanted to, I could have justified it.

I couldn't buy it because I flipped through it. And it had AD&D Second Edition-style artwork.

Don't get me wrong, there was nothing wrong with the artwork of 2E. But I think everyone will admit that it was very different from the old Basic D&D art style. And frankly, the juxtiposition was just too much for my (apparently Lawful) brain. ;)

I just couldn't get into it. No matter what the words said, the book "felt" like a 2E book, not a Basic/Expert/Whatever book.

I know, I'm crazy. But there it is, nonetheless.

On a different note, I think the one thing I miss most about simpler systems is the simpler combat. I like all the new options, I like AoOs and all that. At the same time, when combat was quicker and less well defined, I think maybe it involved more imagination, since people weren't worried about counting the exact distance between them and their foe.

But maybe that's just me.

I'd love to get the group to play Basic again. So simple and quick. But they love thier feats and combos. :(

I kinda have to agree with them. I like feats. I like the greater range of classes. I like that races are races, not classes. I like options. I like that the game system makes more sense.

At the same time, I understand where you're coming from. Like I said above, I liked the fact that it was a simpler system.

But ultimately, if forced to choose between consistency and greater options versus a simpler system, I'll choose the former.

Nostalgia notwithstanding. ;)
