Just got Wilderlands 3.5 boxed set...

It was der kluge that sold me on the Wilderlands to start! He's my hero, so I stole his idea and used the FR gods...mostly. ( I had to use Set from the PG, just because one of my gang is a Conan nut.)

ANyway, the FR deities work just as good. If you read the historical portion in the box set, the part that explains how the Wilderlands came about, you'll find a good explanation why pretty much any god is fair game. I could be wrong, but most of the Wilderlands dieties in the PG are rehashes of various real world based mythologies anyway. (Odin, Set, Thor, Athena etc...if you have Legends and Lore/Dieties and Demigods, you've got a lot of them already.)

There are a few Wilderlands specific deities, namely Mycr and Modron. Most of the info. in the boxed is fairly sketchy anyway, so you won't be missing too much*.

*in my humble opinion of what I've read so far.

Second, it even tells you outright to use the deities from Third Edition Deities & Demigods. I like the Necromancer gods a little better (even if most of them are demons). I plan to make my own gods to fill the gap (stolen from literature, of course).

Wont argue with you there. But in scanning the names of the WL Deities, a good number of them sound pretty familiar, even if you don't play WL. I missed the reference to Deities and Demigods.

For me, I just got the PG on PDF for the flavor text on the gods and the rest of the history. I'm not crazy about the subraces, and for my games I've dropped them altogether.

The boxed set is perfect for the GM who wants to flesh out his own campaign world as it contains a lot of width but little depth.

In addition to gods, races, classes, and new feats, the PG also includes more recent history. The history section in the box set ends rather abruptly, and tells the reader to go to the PG for the more recent stuff. This is the one area where the box set does refer to the PG.

The PG also includes a 'players map', which is intentionally not 100 percent accurate. The maps in the box set are meant for the Judge. Allowing players access to them would give them way too much info.

Personally, I would not run a Wilderlands campaign without the PG (and I don't even GM 3e, so the new feats, PrCs, etc. is a complete waste of space for my purposes -- I just like the campaign information and history stuff).

OTOH, if you're simply going to loot the box set for ideas, then there is no need for the PG.

I have it, but was kind of disappointed. It's a very shallow setting. That is, covers a lot of ground, but not in depth. And a lot of the material feels like random gibberish that was rolled up on random tables or are pop culture references from the 70s...

I'd pretty much sworn off buying campaign settings because I always seem to find them full of useless (to me, at least) depth. Now you've gone & tempted me to seek this one out. (>_<)

The Wilderlands isn't considered an old classic setting for nothing. You want a taste? Go to the Necromancergames website and go to the Judges Guild links and read the free Pegasus downloads and other stuff. Necromancer did an awesome job renovating this old setting.
