Just wondering

Does anybody else other than my group play hackmaster? I play 1e, 2e, and OD&D (they require only minor tweaking to make them interchangeable) and hackmaster has been an INVALUABLE supplement. i noticed that other people on this website play the older D&D versions, but noone ever mentions hackmaster which is great for the comic aspect as well as fresh ideas and breathing life into a classic game for those of us who just arent ready to convert.

i recommend for all the old-schoolers out there to pick up a hackmaster module called "slaughter-house indigo". its only about 11 dollars and worth every penny.
i was wondering if anybody else has found any great hackmaster material, or if they even played.

I love Hackmaster....in theory. In practice, it's a bit overkill. After ditching critical hits, the more ridiculous talents and skills, and modifying the training system, I found it to be very playable, and a hell of a game.

My big issue with Hackmaster has always been... What am I getting that I don't already have in my 1e books? The answer I always get are many of those things that came out for 2e that I never wanted and thus never bought in the first place. I mean, let's face it, if I was interested in "evolving my game" I probably would have eventually moved on to 2e and 3e.

Granted, the original adventures like Slaughterhouse Indigo and Robilar's City of Brass, I should buy. I will, eventually. Pretty much all the "converted" adventures I already have, and have no interest whatsoever in acquiring parody versions.

And there's no way in heck I'm going to drop $160 on 8 books worth of goofy monsters.

i understand all that, i guess its more the adventures im interested in. i dont much care the monster books either. i have one, but i dont like the constant comedic monsters much myself. you do start to pine for the days of a good old pit fiend and not some goofy abominantion. then again, im being on using other sytems as supplements into my game. for instance, i took the sanity system from chaosium's cthulhu games and its been great.

IMO, a vastly superior 'in print' game that is also compatible with pre-3e D&D is 'Castles and Crusades'. It's both cheaper and a better system than Hackmaster. Plus Gygax is writing for it (producing his original Castle Greyhawk at long last, redubbed 'Castle Zagyg'). Hackmaster never really appealed to me. (Although some of the adventures look interesting, esp. 'City of Brass'.)

i own all of the 4ed material.

read your GMG... Hackmaster is 4ed.

i have converted the stuff for my OD&D campaign.
