I wonder, though if a well-made claymore wouldn't do just as well. Steel is generally pretty tough stuff.

I've seen a guy deflect THROWN weapons with a katana, but bullets?

Click the link at the bottom for the 9mm bullet. That one also sliced the bullet in half, but the spread was large enough that I think it WOULD have protected the proverbial wielder. So maybe not a machinegun, but possibly a light pistol.
