Just wondering how many people house ruled this one away when 3.5 came around: Do Keen and Improved Crit stack, or no? I want to say stack them, since the concept of expanding crit ranges basically dies if you don't stack.

We've been using 3.5 crit range rules since it came out and haven't had any problems. You can still get a nice crit range via weapon master (13-20/x2 or 17-20/x4 are both viable choices).

Strictly speaking, by the 3.5 rules as written, you can't do better than 15-20/x2 or 18-20/x4 via Weapon Master.

Neither the Improved Critical feat nor the Keen ability will stack with any effect that improves critical range.

So if your Weapon Master uses a rapier, his Improved Critical feat improves 18-20 to 15-20, and the class feature increases 18-20 by 2 to 16-20, since Improved Critical does not stack... and 15-20 is what you end up with.

If he uses a pick, Imp Crit improves 20 to 19-20, and the class feature increases the range (20) by 2 to 18-20. No stacking to get 17-20.

However, Andy Collins has suggested that in his own game, he would allow the class feature to stack. But it's not rules-as-written.

I don't have a problem with the change. High-level D&D is deadly enough that any change that reduces damage output is a good thing, in my book.

Thanks for fixing it, hyp!

Is there anything crazy about weapon master that doesn't port to 3.5 well? Any particular reason why it wouldn't have been reprinted in Complete Warrior?

Thanks,
