Killer DMs unite!

Say, DM with a Vengence, not that I'm personally complaining, but you may just want to put a little "Spoiler" tag above your list, it did give away some surprises in the adventure.

does it count if you've killed off the same character from one player 3 or 4 times... It's not my fault he keeps coming back...

the other PC's know he'll cough-up the coin for a Resurrection so they keep bringing him back... (although last time he needed a True Res, given that his body was dissolved by a Green Dragon's breath weapon...;) )

each time he comes back, he's got an even bigger attitude, making him even more of a preferred target to major bad guys...

he loves that character so much... and I love forcing him to spend his split of treasure on bringing his sorry-butt back from the dead...

;)

It counts. The elf fighter/rogue Guevera has died 8 times in my game, losing a level and much gp each time, but he's come back every time.

It's not how many times you permanently kill them (that's another count, and also one that I'm doing okay with), it's how many times you kill them at all.

I haven't included the three petrifications in my count, however. :)

Cheers!

I like to run a high fatality rate game; after all, there are so many cool characters to build, how can you help but want to make a new one? At least, that's the attitude I have as a player, and most of my players seem to have as well. On the other hand, a well-played character's evolution from 1st to high level is really cool as well.

I don't fudge the dice nearly as much as I used to back in the days of 1e and 2e. I usually let them fall where they may- dice and characters both.

i have been running a game since november.

and since then there have been nine deaths.

does that make me a killer dm?

my players seem to think so!:D

I'm currently running RttToEE (spoiler warning)and so far I've run 2 seesions and killed a character each session. I let the players shoose whatere race they wanted too. The first death was a half-gold dragon human and was killed by the dragon in the moathouse (first breath weapon attack) and the second was from a gnoll in the 1st lower lvl of the moathouse (triple crit with the battle axe [20,20 ,20]) against the half-earth elemental gnome. (Yeah he got a hold of the book when I wasn't looking and saw the template so I just let him use it)

2 for 2. Wahoo!

In RttToEE, I had around 18 deaths in 25 pages.

4 died attacking the castle in town
1 went CE in the rescue attempt and joined the forces of Elemental Evil.

You've got some killer players, dude! ;)

Night Below conversion, 9 deaths 4 months:

5 deaths in taking the keep
1 death in random encounter
3 deaths in attacking trolls in underdark

My PC's never retreat and charge into everything...fools...oh well..thank god for pcgen..

look it from perspective.........

Now after 3 years my players (two of the five) finaly solved my secret. When they created a character they created someone who was about to die.

All my players where dead before the game started :D and they did not guess it till now. I let them make characters of level 3 and in 3 years they did not gain a level, they did not die of some encounters, some mobs even tried to use rituals (turning attempts) at them.......

Am I now also a killer DM ?

laiyna

In my campaign, getting raised from the dead is expensive and difficult. I've also imposed a stronger penalty on those actually casting the spells to raise the dead...I've made it more taxing on them.

Lastly, I only allow a character to be raised once, and with the knowledge that being raised from the dead makes them a bit of an aberration (even to the point of some religions frowning upon it). I'm allowing a single raise, because not allowing at least one would be a little harsh. I WANT them to continue playing the same character. They've developed a history with the character, and their background is familiar to them. But, being adventurers, they are certainly not immune to death and tragedy (otherwise, more people would adventure). I want them to have a fear of death. If the character dies once, you can bet the player will be more cautious...
