D&D General Killing Gods

He / Him
The Religion in D&D thread made me think about how much I enjoy the RPG storyline of killing a god. It could be a minor god, a big animal like in Princess Mononoke, a tentacled thing from beyond the world worshiped by a cult, or facing off against a major god in their own plane. These stories are always so epic to me, and something I really enjoy.

When have you or your group faced off against a god in a D&D game?

I often use ancient epic dragons as God level beings that serve as the crux and BBEG of a campaign, and defeating it the ultimate goal. Does that count?

When this topic comes up, I always recommend Monte Cook's Requiem for a God. It came out during 3.X, but more than just stats and classes, there are other good details in the book.

It talks about a god dying - whether by murder or neglect, or even choosing to step down. It talks about things like what happens to clerics and their abilities, whether they'd hide the loss of power from society etc. It covers things like if a god of death dies, all of a sudden you have too bountiful of harvests, and all kinds of weird side effects. Also has rules for using godflesh and godblood for item creation or empowering a character.

Best item in there? The Nightmare Lance - it's actually not a lance, but a scaffolding system for an item designed to kill the sun. So... pro-vampire stuff.

In my Sins of the Scorpion Age game I used a "Forgotten God" that my players took out fairly early on. It's a CR 10 statblock from A5e's Monstrous Menagerie. REALLY fun monster.

I don't like PCs killing gods, personally--I feel that it makes the deities lose their mystique. However, I did run the last several segments of Scales of War (converted to 5E) as a sequel to Tyranny of Dragons. I changed the story a bit so that Bahamut was only mostly dead and Tiamat was in the process of absorbing his essence in order to solidify her form outside of Avernus. If the players could defeat Tiamat quickly enough, she would release Bahamut's essence (so that he could be revived) and return to the Nine Hells. This also put some time pressure on the campaign.

Never. Not really my thing, but gotta say, Doom Patrol would be my style if I was killing gods in my TTRPGs.
