First off Ghengis Khan is the man. Second yes when it comes down to it that's pretty much alot of the in game motivation of the PCs. And while in d&d you do this, it's not real, therefore not the best thing in life.

In my previous game their motivation was conquest, to kill opposing warlords, unite various warring tribes, defeat the invading nations and powerful wizards within their homelands etc. It was a fairly low magic game so most of the stuff they took was, control over people, livestock and so forth.

Wizard: Charm things and take their stuff.

Cleric: Convert things and take their stuff.

Rogue: Take their stuff without their knowing about it.

Ranger: Get them to give you their stuff before you'll lead them out of the wilderness.

Paladin: Solicit donations to your church.

Anybody got more?
Bard: keep talking till eventually they give up, throw their stuff at you and run away
