Is the Shugenja balanced vs a Sorcerer in a regular campaign? The player wants something similar.

I see the Shugenja has a d6 for hit points, more spells known, albeit limited by element to some degree, and no familiar. I can't decide whether it's balanced enough so am looking for others' viewpoints.

It is off topic but do they call "Shukenja" in OA? That is wrong Japanese. "Shugenja" is correct (pronounce as shu-ghen-ja, not shu-jen-ja).

Also, "Kensai" is wrong. Sword saint (like Miyamoto Musashi) is "Kensei" (pronounce as ken-say).

Well, a shukenja isn't a sorcerer, now is it? If it was balanced, they would have just called the shukenja a socrerer. ;) Just pokin', but I think I have a good point.

Heh, thanks. I did it from memory. It should be "Shugenja."

The ShuGengja is superior to the sorcerer that if they specialize in air or earth, at 20th they have access to BOTH True Resurection (sp?) and Meteor Swarm. Damn.

Shukenjas was the name for shamans in 2e.

I thought fireball-healers broke rules?

The shugenja's spell selection is kinda limited if you use only OA. They get a lot more spells to choose from if you use the Rokugan books.

That is very true. But the more add ons with spells help out any spellcaster.

Well, keep in mind that the Shugenja who take Fire can't use Water spells, which is where all the healing is.

Overall, both classes are good. The Shugenja can use armor and have more HP though, which is a nice plus, so I give it the edge.

I've played a water shugenja, that was a horrible experience. At sixth level my only offensive spell was hold person. I was nothing but a walking healing battery. The rest of the party was slaying things right and left, I waited until one of them got a boo-boo.

I voted for sorcerer, the shugenja just has too many limits on spell selection.

Well, that was your own fault, wasn't it? ;) The water element is basically the cleric side of things, as should have been obvious from a quick scan of the spell list. If you wanted to play a boom spell specialist, you should have specialised in fire. Lots of ways to blow things up, there.
