I sketched this Kobold Adventuring Group last night during my D&D game. What's their story? How did they start adventuring? Who's in charge?

They were inspired to take up arms in the same manner as those adventurers who killed half of their gaggle. Surprisingly, one of them is smart enough to use magic, and while smarts are usually mocked in kobold gaggles, this one leads his team under threat of magic missile. Now that they look the part, they're going to seek revenge on their adventurer role-models. If only they realized skill is at least as important as gear...
 

They found an illustrated book with tales of heroes and adventurers. Their clan being largely isolated from other intelligent species, they never reaise that kobolds aren't usually heroes in the traditional mould. When adventure calls, they answer!

As an aside, I love this kind of idea. During the lockdown I put together a series of short adventures for my group to play online, where everyone was a level 1 halfling. They encountered goblins, ogres, evil dwarves, sprites, a dire wolf, a bitter elf, a hag and various other folklorish enemies - very much "the plucky little underdogs of the forest" against "bigger, badder monsters".

Reminds me of an "against the giants" campaign idea I had, in which the players all play Small Races in a Shire-type land that's been taken over by orcs and hobgoblins. All the medium-size races got run off the land, so the players would be Halflings and Gnomes, or Goblins freed from hobgoblin slavery, or Kobolds allying with their gnomish enemies to fight the bigger foes.

At low levels, the villains would be medium-size, and then they'd start getting larger and larger as the campaign progressed!
