D&D 5E [Kobold Press] Vault of Magic Kickstarter

Well that is ridiculous. RPGs are a low margin business and having some certainty is very important. Kickstarting has also helped to increase the quality of books both in editing and art. Compare some of the 3PP content for 3.5 vs now and it is a huge jump forward.
Yeah, there are big advantages to Kickstarter-ing a project rather than traditional publishing. It involves much less risk for the publisher, since producing and printing nice-looking game books is fricking expensive.

This is very accurate. It's why many (if not most) RPG companies other than Wizards of the Coast and Paizo use Kickstarter to produce top quality books and other products for folks (and heck, even Paizo has done a Kickstarter or two!)

This may seem like a silly question, but how many of the magic items have art?

Not silly at all! In fact, it's a very important question to me! :)

I can't give an exact amount, but I can say MANY of the items will be illustrated, and there are a number of art stretch goals which will add even more art.

I think it's very safe to say that Vault of Magic will be very lavishly illustrated, with a great many of the 800+ magic items getting high quality art!

You know, it bothers me when an established business, like Kobold Press, uses Kickstarter to raise funds when they already have money coming in....
You make it sound like they're Joe Moneybags. They're an RPG company, and the employees are NOT rich. They want to provide the highest quality product they can to the fans, and when the fans boot the bill the FANS (us) reap the benefits. :) It's win win.
