KotS A TPK turned Capture (Advice, Spoilers)

Not to dis the hardworkind designers, but honestly I think I've been making less mistakes with the rules in the time we've been playing then the mistakes that can be found in KotS itself, especially in the pregens.

To be fair to the designers, I remember Mearls saying that they were writing KotS against a moving target, because the rules were still being modified while they were writing it.

I know from experience that it is very hard to keep all the details in synch in that kind of situation.

Good read, and I think the capture instead of TPK is an excellent choice. I assume their gear may appear on random guys in the encounters now?

I'm amused by something. The way the badguys would automatically strip the party of their weapons, etc. In my pre-4e group, the PCs captured a Shadar-Kai (who is plot somewhat important, but had already used his Shadow Jaunt recently), and were interrogating him... without taking his spiked chain. He got off his Dance of Death before the PCs joined together to kill him, but at the time I thought it was so silly that no one thought to strip him of his gear. But, I think you're right, the baddies would strip them of their gear.

thanks for the entertaining read!

the captivity is a nice solution, and don't give them a chance to get their
stuff back too easily. Maybe when all else is done.

Yeah, my fighter had a +1 Flaming Axe, which is now the property of Irontooth himself.

Yeah, their stuff is spread out amongst the goblins and kobolds. They'll have to get it back one bit at a time...

Hey Fitz,

I think you handled things pretty well. I'd be interested in seeing the details of the skill challenge when you write it up, as well.

Cheers!

I thought I read/heard somewhere that a monster's treasure is usually already factored into its description. Or something like that. Basically, that adding magic item effects to monsters would make them more powerful than they're meant to be.

Of course, I can't find this info anywhere, but I distinctly remember reading/hearing it.

Assuming the characters do get out of this OK, I can imagine that they'll have some fun when they get back to take on Irontooth for revenge.

"Oi! That's my axe!"

Great thread. I've just started KotS.
The party seems to be romping and stomping so far so we'll see how long that lasts.

With more actors in a conflict (more pcs, more monsters) it seems possible to me that things could get more swingy. More dice falling, some weird patterns and you might have it tough.

Sounds like you've handled it like a champ though; please keep us posted on how it's going!
