LARPs?

Thanks for the suggestion Umban, but it's not what I'm looking for. Though I should point out that we tend to play outside when we can so it's not that hard to lose a die. I'm sure the system works for some groups, but not it does seem to fit mine.

As you will.

To hijack...
A number of folks who have played MET seem to have a thing against dice. I have it from one of the authors of RTLB that the system was originally concieved with a very "rock-paper-scissors" style resolution system. In playtesting, though, they tried dice variants as well, and they found that the players generally preferred dice.

Rock-paper-scissors type things have advantages - they are quick and smooth. However, that usefulness is pretty much lost when the action is going to pause game-time anyway. If you have to pause to discuss, or check paperwork or cards or what have you, there's no real gain with RPS, and dice make better randomizers.

Larp Weapons

hi, I am fairly experienced at larps (I have been doing larps for abit more than a year and a half. My group started out using wooden, we then switched to live steel, then someone had a really good idea and came along with the boffer weapon. So, I am seeking a quest of how to make the perfect boffer weapon for larps. I have tried the normal PVC pipe and foam, but it wobbles too much, I have used wooden dowels, but they break, I am trying to avoid PVC and dowel rods combined because the weight will be too great (it will hit people really hard) I then came upon carbon fibre, but if broken, it will cause lots of trouble with lungs and skin.... so, I would really like to know how to make the perfect boffer weapon. (boffer weapons will be used for full contact, not just for show)

I started larping far far before I began playing DnD, the clip someone mentioned is a classic its so damn funny and the picture on the previous page is as well. Before I played DnD I thought that it was a bit geeky and a bit wet, played by people like the comic book guy out of the simpsons, just shows its best not to make stupid stupid assumptions.

I play in a high fantasy system in britain called the lorien trust, 4 main events a year (about 3000-4000 people) and lots of small sanctioned events all through the winter (about 30 - 50 people). Theres a magic system and incantation and live combat using latex weapons (which are similar to whats used in america but apparently much much better looking).

The site linked below is one with instructions how to make reasonable latex weapons using fairly easy to get stuff (its also got some pics of BB gun mods and a dagon costume that are pretty damn cool) that might help you out.

MET has never appealed to me (I used to say that it was far too close to table-top rpg ratehr than live, now I just say its BAD)

I have done a single LARP at Gencon and loved it - the first night i wandered around with a few people who became friends, pretty much entertaining eachother and ignoring the metaplot.

The second night I had a symbol drawn on my forehead and was immediatly pulled into 3 different plots - The Climaxtic battle sucked, as It was so ridiculously overpowered that it was over in one round ( and a reality revision turn - thanks to some changeling power.)
I would do it again but it seems crucial how welcoming people are. I would also prefer pregen characters - It would cut way back on abuses.

two best memories - the applecheeked man who smiled, all the time! turned out to be an Ogre child(er) and captain of the Chaos crew - he sucessfully convinced much of the seelie and Unseelie courts he was working for them.

The other was a guy lying on the floor. Everytime I was part of a major political event He was always there lying on the floor - a perfect boneless fae spy. After the game I complemented him on his portrail - only to be told he was actually just suffering sleep dep, and he kept falling asleep. ;)

Cthulhu Live has some cool situation resolution methods that are slightly different and worth checking out. I used to run CL games every now and again and absolutely loved it. Completely different vibe then MET (which I enjoy) and the Fantasy ones (which really don't appeal to me, I'm with Teflon Billy on that one.) I strongly reccomend Cuthlu Live to anyone looking for a slightly different larping experience.

I enjoy LARPing a lot, though I haven't in a couple years. I have a really good friend in Poland who LARPS, but they play in Polish and I don't speak it worth crap. Anyway, give it a shot.

And Cam Sluts rock!

Hmmmm, I think I'll still pass ;)
Oh damn, now I need to go wipe off my monitor and keyboard.

Funniest thing I've seen all week.

A friend of mine runs his own LARP in his backyard (yeah, its that big a yard) every other year or so. He uses Rock-Paper-Scissors for all combat resolution and saves, basically any conflict you want a random determination of. Personally, I think he enjoys RPS and the LARP is just a cover. :p

I've also been to a few LARPs run by Wilmark Dynasty (Days of Knights gamestore in Newark DE)

Both had feasts with really good food along with lots of fun roleplaying/scenery-chewing overacting etc. It can be fun.

Try using carbon fiber rods for the core, then glueing thin layers of closed cell foam to build up the blade shape, then covering it with a cloth sock. That's what we mostly do. You can get the carbon rods at a kite store.

What's the story with that guy with the staff gently tapping the monster about twenty times on the back? (it looks like the monster can;t even tell he's being hit) Is that how fights are settled? I expected it to be more like the SCA where they really wale away on one another.

The SCA has strict armour and training requirements too. Plus they pay a hell of a lot more for insurance. Contemplate for a moment running a combat event without insurance... Also starting from a base of plate mail would severely hamper costuming possibilities for PCs and NPCs alike. Which would be a shame....

And yes, LARPing can be a hell of a lot of fun. I'm partial to the IFGS system, because that's what I started in, and besides we have some fun stuff in our games. Anyone want to hear about the time we made the PCs crawl through a dead giant worm?
