I love the one review by the Dallas Morning News:

"If you see one French costume drama martial arts werewolf secret society romance this year, make sure this is it."

that IS a great line, Kid.

I didn't get the DVD until I could get it for $9.99, simply because it was then cheap enough for me to break down and buy, instead of waiting for the much-preferred, but difficult-to-acquire (here) 3 disc (truly) Special Edition that was available in Canada, I believe.

Usually, I'd say watch the movie with the subtitles on, but this is one of the few movies where the English dub was better for me.
I think it's because (as far as I'm aware) the original actors dubbed their voices (it wasn't a cheapo anime dub) AND the movie has long periods with little to no talking - the lanuage is not really the most critical thing in Brotherhood of the Wolf.

I just watched this for the first time last night, and I thought it was excellent. Although Mani was an entirely fictional character, the mix of French and Native American (and the suggestion of African) mythology was inspired. This was unlike other French movies, even other action movies ("La Femme Nikita"), mostly for the martial arts. I also don't recall other French movies making such obvious use of cgi ("City of Lost Children" perhaps).

And it's true! Well, in part. The Beast of Gevaudan was real, although they're not 100% sure what it was. And the main creepy guy with one arm and the cool sword might have been based on Jean Chastel, a real figure from the Gevaudan story who some've guessed had something to do with the origins of the Beast.

I liked it, but I can see why it didn't do very well in the U.S.

Actually it did spectacularly well in the US as far as foreign-language films go. I believe it's something like #2 or #3 on the list of money-makers, behind Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Personally, I have no love for French cinema, but this is one of the two or three films I've seen that I've really enjoyed.
