Le Pacts des Loups (Brotherhood of the Wolf)

And it's true! Well, in part. The Beast of Gevaudan was real, although they're not 100% sure what it was. And the main creepy guy with one arm and the cool sword might have been based on Jean Chastel, a real figure from the Gevaudan story who some've guessed had something to do with the origins of the Beast.
That sword quickly became the most ripped off thing in the history of gaming.

And we freakin' loved it. :)

Brilliant !!

I thought this movie was brilliant and very well thought out, with just enough dialogue to make it interesting and explain certain things but not too much to spoil the atmosphere. For me this was a triumph of French Cinema and will definitely add it to my DVD Collection. I hope that Hollywood does not spoil it with a re-make. The subtitles were not a problem but I would prefer the Dubbed version to concentrate more on the effects, scenery and set pieces, not to mention the beautifull actresses. Cheers All :)

Huh??

I can't believe the positive comments being heaped upon this movie. It was utter rubbish.

No, in fact I take that back, this movie most definitely fits into the 'so bad it's good' category. When I saw it most of the people watching it, myself included, were in stitches laughing at just how bad it was.

Reminds me of all the positive comments I read about the 13th Warrior.

I enjoyed 13th Warrior as a decent fantasy action movie, though it got panned when it came out. And the book was much cooler.

Brotherhood of the Wolf is one of my favorite movies, and well worth watching in the original french. The cgi doens't always work for me but the action and acting were excellent. For whatever reason, the martial arts worked for me. Unlike Musketeer, where the martial arts seemed badly out of place and realy annoying.

Well everyone I know liked it, but that's just one of the wonderful things about individual thought, we can all disagree. There is no movie out there which is 100% loved by everybody because people like different things.

I also really disliked this movie. I kept watching it only because of what I have read here. I personally thought it was dull, with poor writing, and characterization. I will admit I have to watch it in english and dupped voices can hurt a movie. I am glad so many people enjoyed the movie, but I will never think about it again.

I first heard about it on Ain't It Cool News, and it was almost a year later before came to the US and the little art house here showed it. Man, I was utterly amazed at it. I still haven't bought the DVD and I need to. The part where the beast appears, seemingly out of the shadows, embarrassed me because I'm so drawn into the film by this time, watching de Fronsac on his horse, that the way the shot is done the thing just Is Right There. "Holy #$@# what IS that?" I go, and hunker down in the seat afterwards :) I purposefuly avoid spoilers as much as possible, but I managed to see something about the true nature of what's going on that I'm expecting the Beast to be a wolf, a large one maybe, but still a wolf :) Scared the crap outta me.

Considering I consider 13th Warrior and Les Pacts des Loupes to be two of my favorite films EVAR, I couldn't tell you. They both had small problems, but nothing that detracted from it for me.

However, I'll lay solid money that you saw the English dub, and not the original language track with subtitles. The English dub is pretty painful to watch, IMHO.

Oh and Wayne, the DVD has some nice extended scenes on it, including the full length version of the first fight scene, and the director's commentary on why they changed what they did or dropped what they did. Great Stuff. Think I'll watch it tonight. Blackshirt, I think you ought to review the Soul Calibur series...Ivy's been all over the whip-sword for years. :)

I thought both these movies had great potential but just started to fall apart by about the halfway mark and descend into madness from there. Ah well, each to his own I say :)
