What about it?

Don't forget about it.

edit: ok, I'm being too silly on a friday...

Lance 1d8/x3

Say you are +3 str bonus
And you Power Attack for -5

So you are at 1d8+14 [(3x1.5)+(5x2)=14.5]

Add leap attack and the PA doubles, so triple 5.

1d8+19

A lance deals double damage if employed by a mounted character in a charge.

Is that (1d8+4)+(1d8+19) or is it (1d8+19)x2 or what?

Add to that a crit?

Leap Attack and Arcane Strike

Leap Attack is a very interesting feat which allows a character to emulate Achilles from the movie Troy. I did find one problem with the feat when taken by a Bladesinger character(Complete Warrior) who also had the Arcane Strike Feat. Both Arcane Strike and Song of Celerity are free actions. So the bladesinger started his charge and used Song of Celerity to cast True Strike. Leaping into the the adjacent square he put 18 points of BAB into the power attack while also pumping a 6th level spell into Arcane Strike. The result was 5 points from the sword + 4 points from strenght + 3 points from enhancement on the sword + 36 points from the power attack + 6d4 (for 16 points) from the Arcane Strike. The damage total for this single attacke was 64 points and could have been worse if he had rolled beter. Since the character can only pull it off once per day I decided to allow the innovative use of the feats. I decided it had gotten the Pit Fiends attention so it concentrated its attack on the bladesinger.

Leap Attack in an interesting feat but like a lot of feats from Compete Adventurer (CV) you really have to look at how they fit into your campaign. I have had to look at the feats from CV closer than any of the other books.

Good gaming,

I gotcha!

Lances deal double damage on a charge - it's mechanically similar to lances always making a normal critical hit whenever you charge.

So: Lances ...

We'll assume, for the moment, that the "a lance is always a two-handed weapon (and therefore 1-for-2 PA) regardless of how it's being used" interpretation is correct. Moreover, having your horse charge and leap qualifies for Leap Attack.

We'll assume an 18 Strength character - +4 is easier to use than +3. ;)

Lances, then, do 1d8 + 6 on a normal hit.

When Power Attacking for -5, you get a +5 bonus on damage. Since the lance is two-handed, that gets doubled to +10. Accordingly, a PA -5 Lance does:

1d8 + 6 + (5x2) = 1d8 + 16 damage

If you charge with your lance, you deal double damage. This really means "roll damage one more time," not "mulitply by two," so:

1d8 + 6 + (5x2) + 1d8 + 6 + (5x2) = 2d8 + 32 damage

If, instead of merely charging, you were to make a Leap Attack, the extra damage from PA is multiplied by 3, not by two, so we end up with:

1d8 + 6 + (5x3) + 1d8 + 6 + (5x3) = 2d8 + 42 damage

And, finally, should you score a critical hit with your Leap Attack, you have a x3 critical multiplier. Again, this means "roll damage two more times," not "multiply by three," so we end up with:

1d8 + 6 + (5x3) + 1d8 + 6 + (5x3) + 1d8 + 6 + (5x3) + 1d8 + 6 + (5x3) = 4d8 + 84

So, in summary:

  • Lance, Normal
    • Normal: 1d8 + 6
    • Critical: 3d8 + 18
  • Lance, Normal, Power Attack (-5)
    • Normal: 1d8 + 16
    • Critical: 3d8 + 48
  • Lance, Charge
    • Normal: 2d8 + 12
    • Critical: 4d8 + 24
  • Lance, Charge, Power Attack (-5)
    • Normal: 2d8 + 32
    • Critical: 4d8 + 64
  • Lance, Leap Attack, Power Attack (-5)
    • Normal: 2d8 + 42
    • Critical: 4d8 + 84
